Upgrade your WordPress automatically!
When it will come to choosing the best extension of the year for WordPress or if asked my opinion about any extension then I’ll choose WordPress Automatic Update (WPAU). This plugin automatically updates your WordPress to the latest version and it follows exactly the same steps which are mentioned in the WordPress upgrade guide.
Here’s what WPAU is capable of :
1. Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
2. Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
3. Downloads the latest files from http://WordPress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
4. Puts the site in maintenance mode.
5. De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
6. Upgrades WordPress files.
7. Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
8. Re-activates the plugins.
I think Keith has done a wonderful job and deserves the appreciation from almost each and every WordPress user
.

Fantastico has a Manual way of doing it, and I used to use it for a while, only coz, the current versions of Fantastico is developed and maintained by my friend :).
It was easier when the number of blogs were less, also there was another glitch, you had to set a cron, which would look for any updates. Now this is the worst possible solution we had in hand, before I came across this plugin. Once I hit this, guess all my blogs have it and I also ensure that I ask any newbie to put it up as well, saves so much time, does great job and off all a free plugin ;).
Thumbs up for this post :)

This is great stuff, but still i would prefer to do it manually, we cant forget that there might be some unstableness as we saw months ago.
