Writely - Online word proccessor and free invites!

Monday, May 01, 2006

Few days back, I posted about Zoho Writer, an alternate of Writely - The online word processor. At that point of time I didnt have writely Invitation but now I have Writely account with me and with the help of it I am able to write the review of this new emerged online word proccessing service. For those who dont know about writely, It is a new service from Google (Google took over writely!) which allows you to create, edit, share, export document files like DOC, PDF, RTF etc. in short it is an ONLINE WORD proccessor. So, here's the review of the Writely & I am also giving Invitations of Writely to my readers :)

Interface : The interface of Writely is simple & Clean. It loads really fast and firstly presents you with a MAIN WINDOW or STARTING PANEL - you may call it whatever you want to call it. It is loads really fast and allows you to create new documents, import documents and various other features like tagging and puting a star to the document.
writely a new google service

After that when you select to create a new document or edit an existing one it opens up a New window which can be called as EDITOR WINDOW, which takes a little bit of time to load, because it is the CORE of the application. That Editor window allows you to perform all word related tasks and allows you to export the files and publish them to blog or send them to emails.

All in all, it is one of the simplest interface available and doesnt give you the feeling of working on a new application unlike Zoho which has everything in one window, Writely's interace is good for Newbies in computers but may give a boring feeling to those who already know about computers, they may like Zoho writer's interface, One more thing which users will like in ZOHO WRITER is it's Tab interface it opens up multiple documents in tabs thus things become easier to operate.

Features : Writely is also a feature rich application. It has some features more than Zoho writer but in some departments it is behind Zoho writer. Here's the list of features :

  • Exports & Import in DOC, RTF, HTML, PDF & Openoffice document. Although it says premium in front of PDF it allows you to save the files without any problems.
  • Has RSS FEED of the document.
  • Has Revisions of the documents just like History feature of Zoho writer and allows you to revert back to previous versions of the document.
  • Allows to post to many many BLOGS, it has a great support for blogs and allows you to blog to various blog platforms and services. For those who want to know about the blogs it supports can find the list here : Supported blog platforms.
  • It allows you to Import files in these formats TXT, HTML, GIF, JPG, DOC, RTF, OPENOFFICE DOCUMENTS.
Value : Again, as it is free it is difficult to calculate the value and on top of it as it is coming from the Google Inc. it becomes priceless.

Ease Of Use : It is fairly simple to use and because its interace is similar to word application it is easy for all the users. Good thing about it is that it has HELP which is missing in ZOHO (dont forget they are also in BETA phase) so, even if a user who is facing problem can always refer to the HELP and resolve the problem.

So, this finishes our review of Writely but now I'll like to discuss upon where they can improve and that will be mostly its interface. I think it needs a bit of work and an interface like Zoho Writer will be certainly a Plus in Writely.
According to me Zoho Writer is a better online word application at this time but still the edge which Writely has with it is that it is owned by Google Inc. so it doesnt have to worry about it popularity and may be in future Google Inc. will buy Zoho as it is just not into Online Word proccessing it has online Spreadsheet software too.

NOTE : And now for those who are here just for the invites of writely and are not interested in the techical article I've written, let me tell you that you can get writely invitation for free! I'll request you to please subscribe to my feeds AND if you could write a good 2-3 line comment on this post or any other previous posts along with email address but as you've noticed I've put Good 2-3 line comment in BOLD so please just
dont come and say I WANT INVITE PLEASE MAIL ME here. I do good amount of work on my posts so I expect some comments on my posts & Subscribing to my feeds will only help you in knowing things better :). hi, I really aprecciated some of your views on both Zoho Writer and Writeley. The fact that it is owned by google, unfortunately, does almost gaurantee Writeley's sucess and inevitable addition of more services to it.
I would appreciate if you could send me an invitation. airguitarist123@gmail.com thanks

As a user of Writely before it was aquired by Google i can definately say it's a great product, however, I do wish they would make the File Size limit for documents a little bigger.

I remember when google was the new search engine and I told many a person about it. It still is the best search in my opinion and gmail (googlemail) is the greatest!

ANyway, writely. I think online processors could really be a tremendous tool, for example I use a linux machine at work other people use windows, if I can access a word file on openoffice, writely I dont care it is all the better!

Editing documents at a webcafe again brilliant. I think this could change the way most people work!

Please could you send me an invite? mattmole@gmail.com

Thanks, Matt

Greetings, Been doing some work with GOFFICE and like the look and feel of this application. One thing that is great is that after you have created your document you can fax, email, or mail (snail) the company will place your document in the mail for you online. No need to go to the post office. (they do request you stay to one snail mail a week). Havnt had a chance to check out Writely or ZOHO. I will check out ZOHO and post some comments once I check it out. In regards to Writely - If you have an any invite left I would love a hack at it (the program not you). I am working with my son's classroom teacher to help him post info to blogs. If I can make it easier for him then he can get the word out. blog is at http://www.class5n.com. Check back with you later.

I've been experimenting with ajaxWrite recently and I really see value in this type of 'software'. I'd like to play around with Writely for curiosity's sake, but also because ajaxWrite seems to have a more limited features set. There really isn't much interoperability or collaborative ability as files must be saved locally and downloaded/uploaded to share or edit. In this way, it sounds like Writely has the edge. That said, ajaxWrite is easy (if you have basic computer skills), clean, fast, and has all the *necessary* features one needs. I agree with you and the other commenters that think Writely will be successful because of Google. Have you tried SketchUp yet? Wow, in about 4 days, I've spent way too many hours toying with it. I'd reccommend giving it a try.

Can you please send me a Writely invite? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the article. I'm mostly here for the invite and I'm not sure exactly what kind of a comment you want, but I'll do a little review of your review if you don't mind constructive criticism.

Your article did a good job comparing Writely to Zoho. One easy way to improve this is give specific examples of how they compare. You said Zoho was better in some ways and Writely was better in some ways. What specific features made you say that?

Unfortunately for me, I haven't used Zoho so I don't really know what to expect from Zoho. You might also compare it to standard word processors that more people have used. I can't imagine that web app word processors have all the features of Word or even Works, so why not tell us what's missing?

Having said that I did like your article, if I were a user of Zoho it would probably be more informative. That said, I'm going to go sign up for Zoho now, and hopefully I'll see a Writely invite soon.

Thanks,

Writely sounds interesting -- particularly the ability to work on something from anywhere. I don't think that's a groundbreaking feature as any *nix geek would be familiar with ssh and X forwarding (which accomplish this and much more). Where writely would have the edge however, is when said geek is away from any X capable computers and doesn't have the time or right to config them. It could be quite handy in those circumstances. This geek: omgrendel@gmail.com would certainly love an invite so he could try it out.

Netvibes is currently my aggregator of choice. Writely comes pre-loaded as an option and I'm looking forward to see how (if at all) the two apps work together.
If I can't get my hands on a writely invite, would you reccomend the Zoho writer?

Hi there! I found you while searching for information about Writely. Looks like you have a great little site here...I'll certainly bookmark it and check back. I'd like to see what you have to say about Google Co-op...I'm a little confused by it myself. I tried some searches in certain areas, and they didn't seem any different than regular Google searches.

Anyway, here's the inevitable begging for an invite to Writely: Can I have an invite to Writely? I am phronko (at) gmail (dot) com . Thanks so much, I've been dying to try it out.

Reviewsaurus: My experience with zohowriter is that it is an excellent service but it I is difficult to format compared to Microsoft Word since it simply does not have the keystrokes or commands to move the copy around the page to where one would prefer it. Also it is difficult to email out of Zohowriter and I used to be able to return documents to it, but now it won't even accept emails from gmail or yahoo. As to future articles I would like to know about altering mailboards of pc's to use updated CPU's for a more favorable FSB (for easier use of new Vista, gaming or movies/video or other high capacity usage. Can I now request an invite to Writely.com? Thanks.

After I read this blog, I signed up on ZohoWriter and Goffice. I like ZohoWriter a lot, but I have difficulties exporting to Word files. Also I have experienced that sometimes pictures can't be seen en exported PDF's.
Goffice is more simple, but works quit allright.

I like Your blog at lot - I've beenreading at lot for the past days.
I would be greatfull to get a Writely invite, so I can compare with Zoho ang Goffice.

Writely will help me ditch MS Outlook. I'm looking to move away from Outlook to Gmail and google calendar. The one other tool I need to complete the switch is an easy online place to store and edit notes, free form to-do lists, etc. As such the acquisition and integration of writely with Google's other offerings makes sense. It's the missing piece.

So if you could send me an invite so I can complete the transition, that would be greatly appreciated. My gmail email is "jklassen"

Google is the number one internet company in my opinion. I subscribe to all the Google Service I can (gmail, picasa web, spreadsheets, pages). I would lobe the chance to understand your great article on Writely in greater detail by having an invite.

I would not expect a service like this to replace desktop software; I would use it for collaboration. Unfortunately, very few of my friends are dorky enough to sign up for a service like Writely, but they are dorky enough to have gMail accounts. Yes, with something like only 5% market penetration, I consider gMail to be something that hasn't spread outside of the dork population.

I am hoping for very tight integration. I had high hopes for Calendar, but it doesn't show up in your gMail unless you go to the Calendar address and create an account. I want it to be available to everyone with a gMail account with no effort on their part. Microsoft, for example, puts out a lot of bad software, but it is still very valuable because it is so ubiquitous. Writely is based on collaboration, and you can't really collaborate with yourself. There is a certain critical mass. Meh. I probably won't get what I want and will be left sad and lonely. C'est la vie.

What's this that xdos says about there being a file size limit?

Regarding your blog -- I'm not sure how much control you have over your CSS template, but the A3BAAA-colored links are barely readable. I made a rhyming couplet to illustrate my feelings.

The colors are hip, trendy, and Web 2.0,
but if they make my eyes burn, I still say "no."

And yes, I would like a Writely account. I looked at it about a week before it was bought by Google, but didn't sign up.
