Clipmarks - Better than Google Notebooks

Monday, June 26, 2006

Sometime back, we saw Google Notebooks, a service which enables you to clip things from the internet or if we say it in Google's terms, it lets you take notes from the web and then lets you store it on their servers.
Recently, I came accross another service which lets you do exactly the same thing! It lets you store those things from the internet which interests you! The service is Clipmarks.com (You may call it a Web 2.0 service). So, in this technical post (I don't know why I am calling it technical post  ) i'll review Clipmarks and will compare it with Google Notebooks.

As I've explained above that the service lets you store the clippings from the internet and lets you store them on their servers. Now, the benefits of that are :

* Lets you manage the bookmarks (Although they stress on the point that they are not bookmarking solution, however it can be easily used as a bookmarking solution.)

* Lets you know the reaction of others on your clippings or you can say it lets you share the links which interests you and others around this world. (Digg thingy!).

* Lets you keep things of your interest in one place.

* Can work as a news source.

Now, here are the main points where it differs from Google Notebooks :

Browser Support :

Clipmarks : It supports Firefox, Internet Explorer & Flock.
Google Notebooks : It supports Firefox & Internet Explorer.

Although, one additional browser (and that too Flock) does'nt make a lot of difference because Firefox & Internet Explorer covers almost the whole web.

Sharing with others :

Clipmarks : It allows users to share their clippings & lets them view and comment on them too.
Google Notebooks : It just allows to make the notes public & provides one static page of those notes.

Now, this is where Clipmarks gets the biggest benefit. They concentrated on the sharing part because people actually want to share their areas of interest and want to know what others think about that and want to share it with others so that they can put their point of view in front of others. Not only this, this way it gets to become a news source too and can act as a bookmarking solution.

Integration with other services :

Clipmarks : It integrates with other services like Del.icio.us and provides the RSS/Feeds.
Google Notebooks : It fails to provide any such tools and thus is very straight forward service.

These small integrations can become handy for those users who want to keep themselves updated in certain topics (like I am interested in Web 2.0 services & about computers in general).

Extension :

Clipmarks : The extension of Clipmark is the worst part of the service and I was not at impressed with it. It makes FOUR buttons on the browser toolbars and fails to provide the customization of the buttons (which any user will love to do). Also the way clips are made is not my style of copying the content. I think the improvements can be done in extension section of the service, they can take the example of Google Notebooks and make it somewhat similar to that or else they can make a menu on the top just the way Del.icio.us makes (a menu next to help).

Google Notebooks. The extension handling is relatively easier than that of Clipmarks. Taking notes is also simpler and does'nt mess the browser look as it just puts one small button in the status bar.

Well, these are some of the points in which the services differ from each other and clearly it is Clipmarks which wins the race! Apart from a small glitch and that of the extension, I don't think that there are any improvements required in the current offerings, however new offerings are always welcome :).

You can't possibly believe that these content hijackers are comparable to google. Clipmarks is a lawsuit in the making, you heard it here.

I don't see how Clipmarks is a "lawsuit in the making" at all. Especially because it always gives credit and a direct link to the very source of the information. I have been using it for years.

I love the Clip to Blog feature. It makes the sharing and storing of excellent and interesting information easy and accessible to all.
