Malware Poses as Microsoft Update!

Thursday, July 27, 2006

According to TrendMicro, there is a new malware on the internet which poses itself as the latest update from Microsoft. It is spreading itself through emails and basically through spam emails. You have to make sure that you delete an email straight away which looks like this :

From: update@microsoft.com
Subject: Warning! New Virus On The Internet! Update Now!

The email contains a link which looks legitimate, however it is not. The link downloads an IRC backdoor (f-secure is calling it W32/FakeMSUpdate) and the link is some thing like this :

http://update.microsoft.go.ro
Please note that, it is always advicable that when you download files from the internet or in this case windows update, then don't rely on these kind of emails, simply go to the proper site and do the download. In this case go to http://windowsupdate.com for the updation of windows or rely on Windows Automatic Update only.
