Read News While Away From Computer!
Monday, July 31, 2006
Well, so lets solve the problem and here goes the whole article with tips for easy mobile computing :
There are two ways of reading the news on the mobile phone and they are either using the online feed reader service or by using the RSS reader for mobile (ah, so is there any third way in computers..Silly me!) and we will know more about them as we continue.
Using Online Rss/Feed Reader Service For Mobile : According to me this will be one of the better ways of reading the feeds because most of the services will support each and every kind of feeds, then it won't matter that the feed you are using is RSS 2.0 or ATOM. It will simply work for you. Some of the services for mobile are :
Google Reader : This popular online feed reader from Google, gives you the ability to read the blogs using your mobile. You'll just need to point your mobile's browser to http://www.google.com/reader/m You can use your existing Google account to access the feeds. That's it! Simple enough eh?
NewsGator : Well, if it is feeds then Newsgator will be always mentioned, because they have some wonderful products related to feeds. Anyway, they are providing the service similar to Google Reader however, for checking the feeds on move, a person will need to subscribe for the premium account. Click here for more info on NewsGator Online Premium.
Bloglines : Another popular and good online feed service which provides the service for mobile for free. To access the bloglines account on your mobile you'll need to create one for free on the bloglines website and then you'll need to point the browser of the mobile to http://www.bloglines.com/mobile.
Xfruits : This is more of an individual service as it takes the content of the feed and displays in the format which is optimized for mobile phones. It can be difficult for user to remember all the URL's given by the service. However, if a user is specific about a particular blog or news feed then they'll find it as a handy service.
Using Software For Reading Rss onMobile :
FreeNews : By far this is the most "talked about" software around. This software runs on almost every brand of phone, because it is a java based software and is supported by almost every phone. A person will need to create the account with the company which provides the service and then the software will synch itself with your account. Click here to know more about the software and service.
Rss Reader Midlet : This is also java based rss reader for mobiles. It allows offline reading and downloads the feeds on mobile itself. More information can be found from the website.
Well, these are two softwares, which will run on almost every phone as they are java based, there are some other softwares too but they are mostly phone specific softwares and that is why I didn't mention them.
In my personal opinion, I'll use an online feed reader service because of the fact that the service supports almost each and every type of feeds and the fact that I've got around 200 feeds in my feed reader and if I'll download the feeds then my mobile phone will not be able to handle that much data. However, it depends on the person and you may have a different point of view regarding this, so use whatever suits you.
