Review Of Google Video : Upcoming video hosting service

Sunday, July 23, 2006

Google Video is a service from Google which allows users to upload their video's and display it on the web for free. It is one of the most successful video hosting service after YouTube. Google is putting lot of efforts in Google Video and is trying to make it the best service around and they are getting successful as well, as the market share is increasing slowly but surely.

Let's review the Google Video and lets find out the PROs and CONs of the service :

PROS :

1. It is free!

2. Allows video's of any file size : Yes, that is one of the best feature of Google Video that it allows its users to upload the video file of any size. There is no limit all.

3. Nice and clean interface : Google is known for the clean interface and they've made sure that the users get the clean interface of the website, however the way the video player covers the maximum portion of the webpage, sometimes the user wishes to scroll down but cant do it because they've used the frames.

4. Good Video and sound quality : Google has given the guidelines that they'll not allow videos whose frame rate is less than 12 frames and they must have bitrate above 260 KBps.

5. Better help section and clear guidelines : Google has clear guidelines and help section. And covers almost all the possible questions which a user may ask.

6. Allows to blog : Google Video allows its users to blog the video directly and without logging into their blog's admin interface, currently they support Blogger, typepad, myspace and livejournal. They also provide the embedded flash code so that the user can include the video on their own in case they don't use these platforms.

7. Google Video Player : This is a great add-on from Google Video, as it allows users to download the free or purchased videos on their computer, so that they can watch the videos while they are offline and it is good for those users who are still having slow internet connection.

8. Google Video Uploader : This is the another tool which helps the users to upload the files and the good thing is that it supports resume as well. So, it becomes convenient for the users to upload using a software rather than the website itself (after all, who has not experienced the browser crash).

CONS :

1. Community : The biggest problem with Google Video is that it misses a big community and that they fail to provide the small tools for easy access of the uploaded videos. They don't have sharing tools and which is a big draw back as these days collaboration and sharing is increasing and becoming integral part of the website services.

2. Google Video Uploader Resume : Although, Google video uploader allows resume but still it is not the actual resume service which a user will like to have. It fails to provide the pause button and thus a user will have to upload the file completely and before that he/she can't close the program, if they will then they'll loose all the uploaded content of that time.

3. No Instant Release : Google Video always verifies the uploaded video and the verification may take some time. I tried two video and in one video it took around 40 hrs. and in the other it took around 24 hrs.

Summary : Google Video is the service from Google and that is a big plus with the service. People trust Google and that is why they will love to use the service. Google is constantly upgrading the service and is providing useful tools to provide better user experience. We can say that Google has done a fair job and the tools they are providing certainly help a user to rely on the service.
