Watch TV On The Internet For Free!

Sunday, July 02, 2006

Recently, I came across a new service which allows its visitors to see the TV channels. I found the site interesting enough, may be because I had never come across any service like this ever. So, I thought that I'll try to find out more information about it, so for finding the information, I contacted the service with certain questions and got a detailed reply from the founder of the service! I'll post the copy of the email (only service related portion) and I am sure you'll find it interesting too!

The service I'm talking about is Streamick. This is a BETA service which lets you enjoy free channel viewing on the internet.

The service can be really helpful for those people who want to watch international TV shows or News and the best thing is that this directory is even particular about what kind of channels will be shown. The service doesn't promote adult channels, thus is safe for your little ones too :)

Now, the channel is shown inside a small yellow POST-IT NOTE and that does attracts the attention of the visitors, in fact with first look it looks like it may be some kind of advertisement. The problem with the POST-IT NOTE is not the advertisement kind of look, however the controls which are like pencil drawn graphic and just looks like some graphic enhancer stuff rather than the control of the TV. There is one more important improvement required and that is it needs a volume control.

The site is under BETA PHASE and is under constant development and the founder has the future plans for the service.

Anyway, here is the section of the email (I asked them certain question and they answered them to me, please note that the answers are completely unaltered and are exactly the way I got it.) :

Question : Is your service completely free ? Do you even show paid streams to the users for free?

Answer : Our service is completely free, and also all the television channels which can be found on the website are free video streaming available to everyone on the internet. There are no paid channels, which we can't show due to copyright issues. All the channels can be found for free on various websites on the internet, for free. Our website aggregate and organize by category and gives the possibility to watch them much more easily. We also always provide a link to the broadcaster website in each page.
Streamick.com doesn’t broadcast or reply any video content (at the moment), all the video streams comes directly from the original broadcasters. Some of the channels that you might thought to be paid channels (like hbo or espn for istance) are streams which come from Asian (Chinese, Taiwanese) broadcasters. These broadcasters have obtained the rights to transmit these channels over the internet from the original network, but since the internet is worldwide, this means that we can also watch them, for free.
The visitors will never have to pay a single penny because the website was build with their help, submitting new TV feeds through our platform system. With the platform system each visitor have the possibility to send a free video stream he found on the web to be included in the directory. Each new TV feed submitted goes through a validation process which requires voting from other users and a final admin review. The platform is also the place where all the TV streams which aren’t working no more are stored. The unworking streams are reported by the users of the website, again with a voting system. I found this automatic system really efficient, much more then an admin manually deleting/adding unworking tv channels.
The website also features a "Streamrank" system, which we can rank all the TV channels mainly by the number of hits and by some other parameters. This also permitted to create the "Cloud view" page, which gives a wide view of what's popular and working in that moment.

Question : Does the channel show exactly what is shown on that particular TV at that point of time or is it all controlled by the channel owners?

Answer :Usually the channels shopw exactly what is shown on that particular TV at that point of time, but many of the channels listed exist over the internet only. All the control of the video streams is in the hands of the channel owners.

Question : I noticed that the channel viewing quality gets adjusted automatically, for e.g. if I switch on ABC NEWS it starts at 320 kbps and later it goes down to 140 kbps.....so, is it controlled by you and the technology you are using or is it done by the channel owners or if you can explain me how it works?

Answer : The automatic bandwidth alignment is a default windows media player feature. When the receiver can't accept all the load of data given, the source of the video stream automatically decreases the bandwidth to avoid an overflow of data on the receiving computer. The same happens when the source doesn’t have enough bandwidth to serve all the requests, so it gives only a fraction of band to each of the channel viewers. This broadband channels usually works on huge CDN (Content delivery network) and they don't have many problems of bandwidth, but it is limited, indeed. Usually these adjustments are due to the limited or busy bandwidth of the receiving device. At the moment if you have at least a 500Kbps DSL connection everything works fine. (NOTE FROM REVIEWSAURUS : It worked for me at 256 kbps)

Question : What are your future plans or ideas on which you are working at this time?

Answer : Our next main goal is to build our own Peer2peer TV platform. with the help of a content delivery infrastructure, we will be able to build a system, similar to bit torrent, where with a single video seed from a server we can easily deliver the video stream to an unlimited number of viewers, allowing a lot of free-to-air satellite channel broadcasters to deliver their contents through the internet in the most scalable and economic way possible. This will take some time ad the help of some investors, but when done I’m sure it will succeed.

Well, by the looks and the future plans of the team it looks like they'll provide a great option in future for the broadcasters and for users and option of watching various useful and important things on the internet for free! I would like to wish them Good Luck in their plans :)

Are u kidding me that reply is filled with soo much bs. Some guy on slashdot proved how much of the feeds on the site are stolen from other sites.

And that whole peer2peer system is a load of bull too, I doubt they'll ever create something that complex - the site seems to be a knock off of icravetv. Many other better services, but they still cant beat real cable

I agree to you that certainly these services are no where near cable however, we never know that where the things will take the turn and when there will be a boost in the technology and we'll have very high bandwidth available for all, then it will be easy to have the TV on the net and that too as good as the cable one :)
