EditGrid - A nice spreadsheets software!
Wednesday, August 02, 2006
As, I've mentioned earlier that I am not at all a power user of spreadsheet softwares but still I know a little bit about them and on that basis and some general basis, I am reviewing this service.
What is EditGrid ?
EditGrid is a web 2.0 service which provides the functionalities of spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.Org Calc. There are some services already running for quite some time and giving competition to EditGrid like Zoho Sheet and Google Spreadsheets.
Here is the review of Editgrid :
Interface : The interface of the service is clean and similar to that of Google Spreadsheets (not completely though). It provides usefull functions in the right click menu too. They have done a good job in making it look like normal spreadsheet softwares. The toolbar also provides some handy functions and all the functions of the software are accessible from the main menu bar on the top of the spreadsheet.
Features : EditGrid, impressed me with some of its features and one of them has to be the remote data function. This function lets users put the data which keeps on changing constantly and updates itself automatically, for e.g. it lets a user put stock exchange and currecy exchange too. This is certainly a nice feature as many users may want to deal with the live data. It has a quite impressive list of FUNCTIONS of spreadsheet which are helpful in usage of spreadsheet, in total it has 516 Functions or formulas and that covers almost each and every feature which a power user may like.
However apart from having these impressive features, it failed a bit because it misses the best thing which Zoho sheet has and that is CHARTS. Most of the spreadsheet users will say that a spreadsheet software is nothing without charts and if that is the case then EditGrid will not be able to impress that section of users.
It has other handy features, like posting the spreadsheet to blog or webpage and sharing with other users and providing the permanenet URL to the spreadsheet. It also provides pre-built templates which can also help newbies. All these features are handy and can help a user in some way or the other.
Ease Of Use : Because the interface of the service is extermely nice and clean, it is easy to use and any spreadsheet user will find no difficulty in using it.
Summary : EditGrid did impress me and I believe that it has quite good features. However, it needs to improve a lot and it will become competitive to Zoho Sheet (so far Zoho sheet impressed me the most) if it will incorporate the Charts function as well. It is certainly better than Google Spreadsheets though :)
