Google Apps : A new name of Gmail for domains!
Thursday, August 31, 2006
As I said in the earlier post of Gmail for domains, that it did'nt let users to chat with other gmail users but that is not the case now. Users can chat with the users of something@gmail.com
One more thing about this service is that they have targetted the medium sized and corporates more instead of individuals. However, they do provide with the service to the individuals (I am one of the example).
Now, this can be extremely good for network adminstrators as now the problem of maintaining the mail servers (exteremly bugging) will not be there. However, this raises the security concerns too. Because, as things are not in the hands of the network admins so they will be reluctant in going for this particular option. However, things may go in favour of Google because of the reputation it holds in the market. Network admins have showed concerns because of the recent release of search data by AOL. Not just that users are showing concerns because it is said that web applications are less secure than the desktop applications and thus it becomes another security problem.
However, Google has proved in past about the security and other such things that they are not a big concern for this search engine giant. They've always created an impression that people can rely on them and thus there will be no such problem for atleast medium sized companies to adopt these low end apps in their enviornment and that too when they are getting all these services for Free!
One more thing that earlier, Gmail for domains was accessed from http://www.google.com/hosted but now this address is redirected to Google Apps Homepage only.
