PhotoSynth - Convert 2D images into 3D

Tuesday, August 01, 2006

Microsoft Live Labs, has come up with a new software idea which is about making 3D images from a series of 2D images of the same geographical area. The software is called PhotoSynth.

Photosynth actually takes the pictures of a similar place in a pool and then analyzes them for the similarties or disimilarities and then creates a 3D enviornment of that area, it will even include people around in the area!

Now, how exactly it works ?

That's the very first question which will rise in everybody's mind and even creators of photosynth knew about it, so they have answered the question before hand. And all the interested people can read it over here : How photosynth works.

Here is the video of the work done by photosynth and I am sure that once you'll watch the video and will notice the features demoed in this video, your jaws will drop!

Demo of Photosynth.

How can I get it ?

Ah, that's what even I wanted to do, but alas this software is in labs at this point of time and we can only wait for this software.

There are lots and lots of promising features in this future product and I can't wait to use it. I hope that Microsoft provides this software for free, however it is unlikely that this kind of software will ever come for free. Maybe, we will have two different versions in which one will be paid and another will be free!

It is amazing to see that how technology is changing the world and the way we use computers or surf the web. I am sure that after the launch of Photosynth, we will have a new web all the way and may be we'll call it Web 3.0.
