Why Netscape Is Better Than Digg!

Monday, August 07, 2006

The world knows that Netscape took the idea of Digg and changed Netscape.com as the clone of Digg. However, after using both the services, I can say that Netscape is much better than Digg in certain areas. I am neigther a big fan of any of the site and nor I am paid by Netscape for writing this. It is just my point of view and what I noticed while using both the services.

Here are the reason due to which I think that Netscape is doing better than Digg :

1. Netscape is faster than Digg : It can be due to the fact that Digg gets lots and lots of traffic and certainly much higher than Netscape. Although, I don't have the figures and numbers to support my statement but I think everyone will agree to this statement that Digg gets higher amount of traffic. Now, this may be one of the reasons of why Digg is slower.

Well, while surfing the Digg Blog, I noticed this entry from Kevin Rose, which confirm that they are adding new server for faster performance.

Wow, we digg effected ourselves...if that makes sense. Give us some time while we add more servers.

In case you are not sure about the term Digg Effect then, let me explain you. This is a situation where a story gets popular and hits the front page of the Digg then there are millions of users who will most likely visit the story and due to which the story writer runs out of bandwidth on their server and ultimately there blog/site gets down for some time. This situation is called Digg effect. But over here Kevin wants to say that, due to high amount of traffic their site is running slow and for that they are adding new servers.

2. Netscape has better options for upcoming stories : This is the main reason for my belief that Netscape is better than Digg. We all visit these sites because of the content we are looking for and to share our thoughts with others, who are interested in the stories. Now, take this example : that as a publisher you submit a story which will help others. Now, what happens in both the services :

In case of Digg : Other users can only access the story from front page or by going through the upcoming stories and clicking on all sort of links and users need to hunt for the story. Which I personally find frustating, it may be easy for others but certainly not for me. And if people don't get to your story then they won't vote for it and if you don't get votes, your story will never reach the front page of the Digg.

But In case of Netscape : Considering the same situation, when a user clicks on any story then they are taken to another page and they are presented with Netscape Navigator frame on the left hand side and on the right hand side the user gets the page or the story they are looking for and in the Navigator frame it shows users the RELATED stories and thus helps users to reach to the exact story or content they are looking for.

Apart from that, user is also presented with Netscape Anchors. Netscape anchors is that section on the homepage of Netscape which shows you featured stories and those stories are selected by the Netscape employees. This means that if as a publisher you submit your story and it gets selected as ANCHORed Story then your story hits the homepage regardless of the fact that it has recieved the votes or not.

Netscape also provides TAGS : This can inturn help a user to reach the stories and the content much faster and in an easier way.

So, here are some of the reasons, due to which I think Netscape is doing better job than Digg. All in all, my point is that Netscape provides much better sources to reach the new upcoming stories and the content which a user is looking for. In case you have a different opinion or in case you disagree to me than feel free to post in the comments.
