XDrive - Aol's Gift For Online Storage!

Friday, August 04, 2006

Xdrive (an AOL brand), an online stroage service which was acquired by AOL last year will provide 5 GB of storage for free. This will give the ability to the users to store any kind of file on the internet, share it with others. However, this service will be free from September.

This will also help in quick access of the files on the internet from anywhere and will also help in creating the backup of some important documents. Believe me this can be a lifesaver somtimes. Even, I've experienced a bad situation where I needed a file and I was just thinking that I wish there was a file storage solution on the internet.

Well, The service is giving the competition to Microsoft's Folder share service, which is giving only 2 GB of space at this point of time. This also means that the speculations of GDRIVE(a file storage service which blogosphere is expecting from google) will also become hot, because this is a service which everyone expects from Google.

I always wished in my early days of internet that is early 1998 that we had a service which could allow online storage. There were some services at that point of time and used to offer something around 10-20 MB per account. Now, whole scenario is different and we have 2 and 5 GBs staring at us.And here is the rest of it.

Hi, the problem with AOL’s 5GB of free online storage offer is that it is meant only for AIM and AOL web users. So the rest of us are not going to be benefited in any way.

Recently, PC World reviewed as many as 17 online backup services and their results were interesting. I was happy to find IBackup, a service I use, rated as the `best all-round backup service.’ I have been backing up my files and folders with IBackup for Windows and I find this user friendly application way ahead of the current lot of similar services.

Briefly, I will tell what I normally do with IBackup for Windows. I have scheduled regular backups of my important files and folders with it. So I am not at all worried about a disk crash, theft or fire because I know my most needed data is safe and secure online. I also make use of their application called IDrive, which had mapped my online account as a local drive on my computer. The advantage of this application is that I can work on my documents or data as if they are on my PC. Installing and using it is very easy and it has 128-bit SSL support.

My favorite music and video files are safely backed up in IDrive Multimedia and all of them can be listened to or watched with a media player. IBackup can also be used to share files by creating sharable links and emailing them to others. You have use a browser-based application called Web-Manager for that. Using this you can also delete files and folders, cut, paste, upload files, refresh and add shortcuts to your favorite folders for quick access, lock/unlock files, maintain an image gallery, create Sub-Accounts for collaborative online storage and access and also webload files from another web location to your IBackup account. Data can be privately shared with another IBackup user using Web-Manager.

IBackup for Windows has many more interesting features. One really good thing about them is that you can try almost all of these features, if you try their free trial. It was such a step that led me to take an IBackup account and remain as their subscriber for the last three years.
