Read Your Favourite Blogs While Watching Screensaver!

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

Real Networks has launched a new software which will allow users to view their favourite blogs and keep themselves updated while watching a screensaver!

The software is called RealTime and it comprises of three programs ; a toolbar for internet explorer, a newsreader automatically filled with information based on the user preferences and a screensaver that would display the headlines and images during the inactivity of the computer user.

The software includes the content from Rolling stones,BBC News, Smartmoney.com, The weather channel and Engadget. The software is currently in Beta and so there is a scope of improvement in the program. It is speculated that it will contain sports score and will include other content in future.

So, the download of 1.86 MB provides you a good tool which allows you to get updated fast and not just feeds but with financial and weather updates too.

The software loads up as a bar just above the windows taskbar, which can be annoying however the software gives the option of auto hiding and even letting it display only when the browser is open. Real Networks have done again a great job in the field of interface, generally there softwares have nice and cute interface.

The only problem with the software or you can say that the feature or its working did'nt impress me was that of not allowing to make the changes directly from the software. The software depends on an account on real.com and in case of any changes whether it's related to addition or removal of feeds or change in the city (in case of weather) it opens up the browser. However, person don't have to signup or fill out any form. I guess they assign an ID to each and every installation and this way they keep track of your preferences (Not sure on this though, but that is the most likely solution of keeping the preference synchronized.)

The screensaver is also nice and it does'nt go without clicking on the button "close" and has absolutely no options to change.

Overall, it is a nice piece of news reader however, it still needs improvement wherein a person can store the news on the computer and it will be nice if they could allow the changes directly from the software and not through browser. Lets hope that they make various improvements in the software and that they have various plans for the future.
