Review Of YubNub - Web's Command Line
Saturday, September 30, 2006
These days also when we have Graphical User Interace, you'll find many people who'll prefer Command Line Interface (CLI) over Graphical User Interface (GUI), however, it is mostly done by network administrators these days.
But, now there is a website which allows not so tech savvy users to run the commands and that too those commands which are made by a user only. It is facility which will allow users to create their own commands on the web or rather shortcuts for various websites. It is a web's command line and the creator's idea is not limited to shortcuts for small URL's but he's got various advanced command's too in his mind.
Here's one example taken from the site :
Finally YubNub now has multiple parameters. This is best explained with an example. Andrew MacDaniel wanted to make a Google Local command called "gloc". Google Local takes two parameters: a "what" and a "where". You can now make such a command using the following URL:
http://www.google.com/local?sc=1&hl=en&q=${what}&near=${where}&btnG=Google+Search&rl=1
Note the two parameters: ${what} and ${where}. So now people can type...
gloc -what pizza -where Poughkeepsie, NY
...and they will be taken to...
http://www.google.com/local?sc=1&hl=en&q=pizza&near=Poughkeepsie%2C+NY&btnG=Google+Search&rl=1
Neat, hey? Note the dashes on "-what" and "-where". This is a tribute to YubNub's command-line heritage. In the command-line world, these are called "switches". "-what" and "-where" would be referred to as the "what switch" and the "where switch".
The idea is good but it has failed to impress me a lot. The reason for that is if I want to go to a site then I'll either use the whole URL, my bookmarks or I'll use google instead of going on to YubNub. In order to make YubNub a great success, the creator will need to incorporate extra ordinary features in the site to make it a huge success. Anyway, I normally do'nt change my browsing style, you may say that I am not comfortable with the change in my browsing style and I hope that it is the same with others too. So, without a great feature YubNub will not be able to attrack lots of users. Although, it will attract Visitors but I doubt that those visitors will become users of the site.

Well, It is just that I am not very comfotable in changing my browsing style but as I said that Idea rocks!
I would like to wish you best of luck and I would hope that you'll be able to integrate those ideas which will make those visitors into users :)
