Zoho Makes Another Bang In Office 2.0

Thursday, September 21, 2006

Adventnet (The only company from India making a mark in Web 2.0), whose Zoho brand is doing extremely good in the Web 2.0 and is a direct competitor of big shots like Google in the field of Office 2.0 Office 2.0 is a term given to those applications which allow people to do their office related work through web applications.

Anyway, apart from that Zoho is doing extremely good and is beating Google in this department quite easily. I'm not sure about how many people are accessing Writely and Zoho (atleast not sure about their visitor stats) but I can say it that without a doubt that Zoho has great features in online word processing and spreadsheets. They are constantly improving their presentation application as well.

Now, Zoho has brought another handy update which lets the users to open the document files (DOC, RTF, ODT & SXW), spreadsheet files (XLS, CSV, SXC) & presentation files ( PPT, PPS, SXI) directly from the web. Confused or not clear about the feature ? Well, don't be, let me have the privledge of explaining the feature.

Search engines like Google & Yahoo not only indexes the html documents or images but they are able to index the document, powerpoint & spreadsheet files as well. They provide the link to the documents directly. Just do a search of Biographical Sketch Format on Google and the very first search result will give you the link to a document file.

In case if a person does'nt have a word editing software like Microsoft word then they will not be able to open that document from the web but now a handy plugin from ZOHO allows you do so! Zoho has come out with a plugin for FIREFOX & INTERNET EXPLORER and when they install the plugin in their browser, they'll be able to open the documents directly from the web and that too without any word editing software by simply right clicking on the link of the document file and selecting "Open with Zoho Writer". The plugin is called QUICK READ and it can be downloaded from the ZOHO writer's homepage (http://www.zohowriter.com).

Not just that, once the document is opened up using the Zoho writer then it lets people edit the document and let them even save it. However, it would have been great if Zoho will allow users to open & edit the PDF files as well :)
