Guruji indian search engineGuruji, the Indian search engine. The first thing which struck my mind after seeing this statement was what’s so Indian about this search engine? So, I thought of checking this search engine. And after, surfing and analyzing the website I came to know about various Indian aspect of the search engine. Now, lets see what exactly is Indian about this search engine. The following points will tell us the Indian factor in this search engine and will tell us that why exactly this search engine will help only Indians and not the rest of the world except tourists.

1. The Word Guruji : the word itself is from the Hindi Language (India’s National Language). The word means the person who teaches you. We can call the person as a teacher in English but the word Guruji adds respect.

2. Built by Two Indians : The search engine has been built by Anurag Dod & Gaurav Mishra. The good thing is that both of them are IITians (IIT, Indian Institute of Technology, is the best engineering college in India and has best brains of India), so we know that the product will be certainly of some quality.

3. It only Scans Indian Content : Now, comes the important point and that is why exactly it is considered as The Indian Search Engine. It scans the web for content related to India only, just as Google India (http://www.google.co.in ) works but the thing in Google India is that it still shows the content of the rest of the world but gives less priority to it. But, Guruji doesnt keep the rest of the data with it, it only keeps the data related to Indian only.

What are the chances of Guruji in the long list of Search Engines ?

1. It is mostly limited to Indian market only and will hardly entertain anyone else. But, at the pace with which India’s internet crowd is increasing, it may have a large internet audience.

2. It is backed by Sequoia Capital India (Sequoia was behind Google, Apple, Nvidia etc.) and by Survir Sujan, who was the co-founder & co-ceo of Baazee.com (now, Ebay India). So, we can say that if Sequoia Capital has shown some interest in Guruji then certainly it has something in it.

The search engine is not good, I do’nt see good results!

Well, as I said before that the search engine scans only Indian content so if you are in New Delhi, India and are looking for a coffee shop then simply open Guruji and type Coffee Shop New Delhi as the search results and you’ll have the information about the Coffee Shop in New Delhi. But you wo’nt find this information in Google. So, this can be serious threat to Google Adwords in India.

All in all, the search engine is certainly promising for the people who are looking to find out information related to India. And as it is fairly new, we can expect it to grow soon as more and more people will submit their sites in the search engine. Remember that it only scans information and keeps the India related information in its index. In case your site has content related to India then go ahead and submit your site at Guruji’s Submit Site Page.

What others are saying about Guruji ?

Sumir Chadha, managing director, Sequoia Capital India, added “We are excited to have partnered with guruji.com as it pushes the envelope on providing better search for Indian Internet users. Their internet search engine is the best in the market.” Taken from Techtree.

Amit Ranjan, has the following point of view about Guruji :

I think Guruji is a very promising prospect. It has the right people backing it (i.e. founders, investors). And it is not trying to benchmark itself to what the Goliath in this field (Google) does. This is important, for one would need to think out of the box, in order to break Google’s stranglehold on Indian search.

Even, I feel the same about the search engine. As it is backed up by the right investors and has got the best brains behind and if lead by good marketing team then certainly it will be able to capture a big internet audience.

ha, this guy seems to be working his whodunit, with only one fact – the iit. It is rather shameful, and stark ignorance on the contributer’s part, that he is ignoring the countless other engineeering graduates (other than iits) who are making india, into a new country. The only iitian contributions are in developing websites, and geeting them promoting through foolish websites, and newspapers, just by their iit tag. No iit man will ever win a noble. Setting up a big industry will also remain their death walk. they do things that are eaily done. by the way there are more than five thouysand search engines around, so take your pick.. http://searchbox.mobi

    Guruji … Pranam!! :)
I see a need for a search engine focused on India. I have been trying to get results on what Indians are searching for to better understand their needs and the efficacy of various marketing campaigns and the data that sites like Alexa and Google insights and Google trends throw out are not getting me anywhere.
It would be great if you could share some statistics on the top 100 key words searched everyday and the top 100 website that people moved to from your search results. You would do everybody else a huge favour and I am sure that marketers would find ways to promote your search engine to get better quality data.
Let me know what you think … I have some other ideas that I wanted to share with you.
