Review Of WebAroo - Search The Web Offline!

Wednesday, October 04, 2006

In the days of Web 2.0, where everyone is trying to bring the power of desktop applications on the web, there is a company called Webaroo Inc. is taking pains to bring the web on your local computer! The software is a sort of offline explorer but has got a beautiful search engine and various features, which will make anyone a fan of this software.

The software is installed as a local webserver and then allows users to add the websites which they want to download on their computers. The websites get downloaded and then people can surf the website as if they are surfing the website online. It gives the option of updating the websites too and this way, a person can always enjoy the updated content.

Webaroo bots scan many websites and then create the web-packs and a user can select the webpacks and then update it on their computer and this way they will get the best of the lot of the web and that too without any efforts. For e.g., Webaroo allows to download the webpack of Wikipedia on the computer (however, keep in mind that this webpack is a download of 4GB!). Although, the software is small enough and is of only 6.57 MB but as I mentioned that there are few web packs which can give you nightmares :D

The software has got features, where in a user can modify the settings of specified website i.e. a user may allow the software to download the links outside the website as well and lets the users decide upto which level they want to download the websites apart from the main website.

I'm using this software regularly and keeping various content rich blogs on my local harddrive and this way I get the facility of reading the blogs without going online. The blogs which I'm reading offline are performancing.com, problogger.net and few others.

Another, great feature of the software is that it allows users to sync the information on their handheld devices too like a PDA or smartphone (although, I didnt have the chance to use this feature as I dont have a PDA). So, that a user can have the access to the information at any point of time. This canbe usefull in a situation where you saw a product's review online and then thought of buying it in store as you do'nt want to use credit card online...so you can sync the information on your PDA and then compare the product by looking at it directly :)

Although, I'll suggest you that do'nt try to sync the wikipedia pack though, your PDA may not be able to hold the data of 4 GB!

All in all, this is a great product and an essential utility to have in the system and a constant use will ceratainly help the serious information seekers.
