DesiMartini - When Desi Meets Social Web!

  24 Dec 2006 by ReviewSaurus

desimartini.jpgDesiMartini is a social networking website which targets Indian Youth by providing normal social networking and spices it up with the mobile sms. The word spices up with mobile sms is used because in India SMS’s are really popular amongst youngsters and DM is hoping to make use of it and become the most popular social networking site in India. They have plans of having 1 million registered users in 6 months only. The site was started by Vivek Pahwa (25) and the company is Pahwa KBS (situated in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Where I live.) Vivek is a recent graduate from Indian School of Business, which is a reputed business school in India.

The site used to be called Wohho but now the name has been changed to DesiMartini (I’ll say much better name). The site seems to be extremely similar to Orkut and any Orkut user will find that they’ve used the terms like SCRAPS etc. in this site as well (some people may notice similar kind of Icons too!). However, the site interface or usability is not that impressive as Orkut. They’ll need to hire a much better web designer to give it a cool look.

DM gives the ability to create personal homepages (with little bit of HTML editing), join communities, make friends, share pictures and let you send free SMS’s (it works, but takes time) and lets you update their current status directly from their cell phones. Now, as far as updating the status is concerned, I’m not sure how many users will be using it but Free SMS is one thing which will help this site in reaching it’s target. I’m sure that this site will reach the milestone of 1 million users in a short time period, provided their media campaign will target on FREE SMS ACROSS INDIA.

  1. [...] DesiMartini is the Indian social network (open for everyone but targeted on Indians by Indians) and last time I covered DM, it looked more obsessed with Orkut but after the update it looks a complete rip-off of Facebook. It is good that they’ve appreciated the excellent design of Facebook but does that really helps DM. I think the idea of original design always rocks. It will be good to see if any good web designer will help DM in making a cool and simple design like FaceBook and to be honest even the Facebook founder accepted the fact that Facebook’s simple design was inspired from the Google’s simple design.
