Few days back, my buddy Rishi ran a Technorati Favorite Exchange program and got great response and that also made think of starting the same favorite exchange program. So, I decided that I’ll go for the same kind of traffic exchange program.

Why I would run something like this ?

1. Better visibility : Yes, this will certainly give me better visibility and the reason for that is that I’m exchanging the link love with the list of blogs, who are currently running this program and they’ll come to know that there is a blog which is ReviewSaurus.

2. Better Technorati Rank : If at all, any other blogger comes and loves the idea then they’ll share the link love with me and that will give me better technorati rank.

Why you should run something like this ?

I think that the above two reason are more than enough to answer your question.

What exactly needs to be done ?

There are some simple steps involved in this and you really don’t have to do something extra ordinary to be part of this exchange program. All you need is a blog and a technorati account and you have to follow these steps :

1. Add ReviewSaurus to your Technorati Favorites by clicking HERE.

2. Leave your Blog address and Technorati Username in the comments section.

3. If possible run this exchange on your blog as well and see the difference :)

My Technorati username is mayankgupta and I hope that I’ll be able to repeat the success which other had in running this program. Anyway, here is the list of blogs which ran this program successfully :

googlerread.pngWhile I was going through my analytics software (Mint), I noticed that someone from Googleplex visited my blog. The person seemed to be interested in the Review of Bloglines and thus I guess that it may be someone from the Google Reader team.

The reason which makes me believe that it will be someone from GooglePlex is that the referer URL was this URL : http://cabbage.corp.google.com:8006/reader/view/ and that makes me believe that it was someone from GooglePlex.

So, is it a reason to be happy or not? I guess yes as we know that Googlers are working toward making Google Reader a better application :P

seamonkey.jpgSeaMonkey is an all-in-one internet application suite. It is a browser, an email client, IRC and it can let you create static webpages too. SeaMonkey is part of Mozilla Foundation and although Mozilla’s main focus is on Firefox & Thunderbird but many volunteer’s are trying to make an all-in-one internet application based on Mozilla’s technology and that’s where SeaMonkey was born. Lets find out how good or bad it is…

PROS of SeaMonkey :

1. All in one application : The biggest feature about SeaMonkey is that it is an all in one internet application suite. It has got a browser, email client, IRC & WYSIWYG editor. So, the good thing is that you don’t have to run around for all these softwares as you can find all this in one application.

2. Based on GECKO : SeaMonkey’s browser is based on GECKO rendering engine (The one used by Firefox) and that means that any webpage, which is made for Firefox will work on SeaMonkey as well and that’s why applications like Gmail or Google reader work perfectly fine on SeaMonkey and it doesn’t have to struggle like Opera has to.

3. Not a memory hog : Seamonkey is not a memory hog and works perfectly well even with less memory. So, any computer which has got less memory doesn’t have to worry about wastage of memory, while running seamonkey.

4. Plugins & Extensions : Seamonkey has got various plugins and extensions and most of the plugins which are available for Firefox are also available for Seamonkey. So, if you are using an excuse that your favorite plugin will not work with seamonkey, then start to think on a better excuse.

5. Various required features : Seamonkey’s browser itself has got lots of features that it can become a bit hard to cover all the features in this single post. It has got inbuilt form manager, password manager & download manager. Chatzilla is the program which is used for IRC. Email client is also fully functional and supports both POP & IMAP. The email client can also detect junk email with the help of junk filters. Composer (i.e. the WYSIWYG editor or the HTML editor) is basic and can’t be compared with other advanced HTML editors but yes it can create very basic pages.

6. Easy to use interface : Even though, it is an all in one application and has got so many features but still the interface of SeaMonkey is simple and quite neat. It easily gives access to all the applications and features and one doesn’t have to worry much about making any changes in the application. The tabbed browser allows you to run various websites in one single window.

CONS of SeaMonkey :

bloglines.jpgBloglines, which is one of the most popular Online Feed Reader service was founded in 2003 by Mark Fletcher & is a property of IAC Search & Media which owns Ask.com as well. Bloglines is one of the tough competitors of Google Reader and has got some cool features but are they good enough, lets find out in the review :

PROS of BlogLines :

1. User Interface : Bloglines is a two pane feed reader. It has got the list of feeds on the left and on the right hand side, one can easily read all the updated items. It gives you the options of going through only new items and also gives the option of going through the earlier items as well.

2. Easy Navigation : Bloglines can be easily navigated with the help of Shortcuts. Thanks to the Ajax that it allows application developers to incorporate shortcuts like local desktop softwares and thus minimizing the use of mouse and increasing the productivity. It lets you keep an interesting article as new for future reference.

3. Great features : Bloglines has got much more features, as compared to other online feed reader services. It allows you to listen to the Podcasts, lets you blog from bloglines only. Lets you import and export the list of feeds. Create folders for similar feeds and thus the navigation becomes a bit easy too. Automatic updates and auto discovery of feeds is also there. Blog search also gives you the option of going through various interesting blog posts going around the blogoshere. One thing which I like the most about Bloglines is that it shows you the related blogs and thus can help you in finding cool blog posts and if you comment regularly on those blogs, then can help you in traffic as well.

4. Supports RSS & ATOM : Bloglines supports both the formats and all the versions of RSS & ATOM and thus brings the transparency. You don’t have to worry about which version you have to subscribe.

5. Displays that list of subscribers : It displays that how many users of bloglines have subscribed to a specific feed and thus gives you the idea about the popularity of a particular blog. As a blogger, you may be interested in knowing your own blogs popularity :)

6. Support for multiple languages : Bloglines is available in various languages and not just English and that gives it upper hand. There are many people on the web, who’d like to use a different language, apart from English.

CONS of Bloglines :

firefox.jpgFew days back, when I opened up my Firefox Browser, I saw a change and the change was that it didn’t open Firefox in the maximized mode and it had lost all the customizations. It showed toolbars in funny way and even if I corrected anything, it just didn’t save the setting and whenever, I used to Fire up the browser, it used to get back to the same stage.

I tried to figure out, what exactly happened but failed, as I’d not installed anything new, no new extension, no new theme, nothing but still that problem occurred. Now, I’ll tell you what I did to fix up the problem :

I Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox but that didn’t fix the problem and the problem kept coming back. Finally, I thought of fixing up the problem by performing one simple step and after the first step, I knew it that it will be the only solution to the problem and believe me it worked too! Here’s what I did :

1. Open C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles (This path will be only applicable in Windows 2000 & XP).
2. There will be one folder in it – Open that too. In my case it was : xe6hocot.default (remember, it will be different in your case).
3. Now, I deleted each and every file in that (xe6hocot.default) folder.
4. Opened up Firefox & installed all the required plugins again.

Well, this solved the problem. Although, any password or any setting which has been saved by you will be lost completely & Firefox will act as if it has been installed for the first time on your computer. But, It’s good to have the problem solved then to keep it and that’s what I did. Now, Firefox is running normally and I can browse the web through my favorite browser…once again.
