Wikipedia05.JPGWikimedia foundation and Linterweb have together announced the first version of Wikipedia on a DVD. This DVD will contain handpicked article (almost 2000 articles) and is going to cost around $ 14.00. At this point of time, only the English version is available, but it is said by the companies that most likely the French version will also be shipped shortly.

Now, considering the fact that Wikipedia English (which is available for free online) has got 1,731,000 + articles in it and the DVD is going to have just 2000 articles, then I think that it is not going to be the best of the deal which one can get. What do you have to say about this offer, do you really think that it will be able to build a huge success as Wikipedia online is making ?

Note : In case you are wondering about which all articles are included in the DVD, then you can always go through the list of articles over here.

youtube.jpgLot is happening at GooglePlex and it seems that Google is playing big at the time of Web 2.0 Expo. Google Presently, Charts functionality and what not. So, after all the buzz in Google docs & spreadsheet, how can we expect that Google will not create the buzz for Youtube!

It has been announced that Youtube will soon launch the filtering technology, with the help of which it will be easy to detect the copyrighted material. I hope that we can get this technology as fast as possible, after all that will not only keep things clean at YouTube, but it will keep Google away from those nasty law suites!

Apart from that, YouTube seems to interested in sharing the advertising revenue with its users and that too at the ratio of 50-50. Well, just imagine that if that happens then how much money will be earned by the top videos. Most likely, it will be launched by next week and I’m sure that lot of videos will be created and that will make Youtube even much more bigger than what it is at this point of time.

No wonder that Youtube which is lying at 4th place according to the Alexa Rank and the constant traffic growth also proves that. Now, imagine that the services, like Yahoo & MSN which are not sharing the revenue with users are capturing the top places and also, there is a constant traffic for these services and a small dip in the Yahoo’s traffic. But, if take the example of Youtube, its traffic has increased and increased and hardly it has gone down.

So, revenue sharing will certainly attract many users and that will help Youtube in beating Yahoo & MSN and we can expect that soon there will be a big upset in the traffic rankings chart. Although, I’m talking about the traffic change which is almost three times of what Youtube is getting now (as shown in the above graph), but if we notice, that it is Youtube only who’s graph is rising constantly and that makes me believe that youtube will be able to reach the number 1 position soon!

It seems that Google has finally started paying attention to its Docs & Spreadsheet because it is after long time, that we are hearing news or any introduction of new products and features in this product. You can create Pie, Columns, Bars, Lines & Scatter type of charts. You just have to select the cells and press the new Charts button and you’ll be able to create the charts.

We hope to see good competition amongst the online office market, as it will be a win win situation for all of us. Who knows, when Microsoft will take the step of providing the Microsoft Office at much cheaper rates :)

Eric Schmidt announced at Web 2.0 Expo that they are going to launch Presentations for Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Even, this news has been posted at Official Google Blog and they are saying that most likely this service will be available by this summer.

Google has acquired Tonic systems and with the help of their technology, Google will be launching Google Presently. Garett Rogers has shown some concern over the accuracy of the formating of the Google Docs and spreadsheet and he thinks (after looking closer at the Tonic Systems) that, they may be able to provide better solution shortly. It is just that Google has to invest some time and money in it.

thinkfree.jpgThinkFree will formally launch the API (Application programing interface), a tool that will allow web developers to host the file on their servers and let their users to view and edit the office documents directly from their servers.

Users will be able to view and edit office documents like Documents, spreadsheets and presentation files and these services can be included in your application through the help of ThinkFree’s API. With the release of API, they are also planning to announce the partnership with various companies and the one which will certainly help them will be the one with Jive Software as Jive Software has made use of this API in ClearSpace (Which is an enterprise level application, that combines blogs, wikis, forum, chats etc.)

This release will certainly increase the competition in the online office services, Zoho has already released the API’s and which has been already used by the services like OmniDrive, Box.Net etc. So, the competition is getting tougher and tougher and as a user, you can expect better and better services :).
