Blogger Interview - Nirmal says, Patience is the key!

  27 Jun 2007 by ReviewSaurus

Nirmal Tv Life Rocks!Today I have the pleasure of posting the email interview that I conducted recently with Nirmal of Life Rocks! 2.0 (one my favorite blogs and successful blogs from India). This interview is the first of the Interview series which I’m going to run on ReviewSaurus. Let’s find out more about Nirmal and his blog :

1. Would you please introduce yourself to our readers ?

I’m Nirmal T V and I hail from the beautiful town of Kochi, Kerala, India. I completed my B.Tech in Civil Engineering and worked as a Civil Engineer for a period of one year. After that I went to complete my Masters in Advanced Construction Technology. Although I’m a Civil Engineer by education, I’m a Software Engineer by profession. I entered software field in Nov 2005.

2. Tell us more about your blog and When & how you came into blogging ?

My blog is Life Rocks! 2.0 which was started by me in October 2005. It was completely a personal blog then and I never knew the existence of tech blogs. I came to blogging just by shear curiosity. My friend had a blog in blogger, so I too decided to try out blogging. In March 2007 Life Rocks moved to own domain and hence was renamed to Life Rocks! 2.0. Recently I started a new blog for cell phone reviews at Cellularized.com.

3. What are your goals for your blog & what benefits do you see in blogging?

Initially blogging was just my hobby, but now blogging is my passion. Benefits of blogging are getting more knowledge about various topics which you are interested in and of course money. But it always takes time to get a good income from blog.

4. What sets you apart from other blogs?

The main difference with my blog is that I don’t blog about technology alone. I cover a vast area like Internet, blogging, Cell phones, softwares, life, my views and also the latest news in focus.This has really proved advantageous to me.

5. Do you have any suggestions for other bloggers or any success secret, which you’d like to share with us ?

  • Success from blogs will not come in a day or a weeks time. You need to be patient with blogging.
  • Write or blog on things you are good at, don’t just concentrate on technology alone. Why I’m specifically saying this is because beginners always tend to start tech blogs. I’m saying that you should not start a tech blog just because the blogosphere is filled with tech blogs. Some people have the misconception that only tech blogs succeed.
  • Update your blog regularly if your are serious in blogging and focus on content. “Content is the King” :-)
  • Get your own domain once you have had decent amount of success from free blogging platforms.

6. Is there anything else, which you’d like to share with our readers?

Blogging should always be a passion, don’t just blog for the sake of making money, although money is also important. I would like to thank all my readers for the support they have shown and hoping to get your continued support and encouragement.

I would like to thank Nirmal for taking out time from a very busy schedule and giving the interview and sharing such wonderful blogging tips. I’m sure many readers will find them useful.

    Right said, when Nirmal said, “Do not start Tech Blogs”.

    I mean, if you had asked me, I would have gone further and said, “Do not start Tech News Blogs”. There are a little too many of them out there, and I am so tired of them. My RSS feed reader has only TechCrunch feeds (and most of the time, I just do ‘Mark all read’).

    It is quite understandable though, for the new bloggers to get into tech blogging. I mean, it will be so exciting for them to start blogging, that they would take that as the subject of their blog. Come on people - look around. Learn from the traditional media. See the variety of topics there?

    Again, before I hijak, I must say - great said Nirmal. (Never checked your blog before, will check it out soon).

    Nice Interview Mayank and Nice tips nirmal

  12. reviewsaurus June 28, 2007 2:31 am

    @ Vyoma : I really don’t think that there is any harm in starting a tech blog. There are lots of tech blogs out there but only those tech blogs are successful who’ve stick to a niche. TechCrunch stuck to Startups and everyone knows, how successful that blog is, Phillip Lenssen only writes about Google and he has the best blog. So, it depends on the niche really.

    There is more scope for tech blogs :D…but what Nirmal said is also correct, that one has to be unique in order to stand out from rest!

    @Ben : Thanks a lot for the compliment :) I’ll say we all rock ! I think “Unique Content” will be the queen…I found your queen!

    @ Madhur : Hats off!!!

    @ Ram : Thank you for the appreciation :)

  13. Vyoma June 28, 2007 2:41 am

    The point thought, Mayank, is that once you start a Tech Blog - it is real hard - that too for new comers to stick to a niche. Eventually, they come to a point that Darren refers to as ‘burnout’ and they hop over the fence, covering just a little more.

    Put ten of such blogs together, and all you see is the same thing. Google Adsense put out option for rounded corner - it is not a surprise how many times it came up in my feed reader - even after major clean up of tech blogs. So, do they stick to the niche?

    Many new tech blogs have fallen off my feed list just because every now and then, I got nauseated by the rehashed story with in a span of 24 hours. Very few stick to the list.

    Tech Crunch stood its ground because it stuck with startups - as you mentioned. Even then, it covers a lot - being within that niche.

    What I meant was that do not just aim for Tech niche - let us keep aside the argument of how broad a category it is. Think about the broader set of things out there. Why struggle within the same confined corridors when you have a lot of halls out there?

  14. Shashank June 28, 2007 3:17 am

    @Ben
    I content is the king than “consistency” might be queen…:D

    and about “starting blog”

    Start a blog on niche in which you are passionate about and don’t just go
    go by the market ..there is no niche left which is not competitive there are millions of blog of every niche …what matter is your consistency and way to pull off and don;t just blog for money…

  15. benedict herold June 28, 2007 4:20 am

    @Mayank, I will take it as compliment :-)

    @Shashank, Hmm.. Now I understand why I didn’t meet my queen :-)

  16. John June 28, 2007 6:27 am

    Thank you for the nice post.

  17. Nirmal June 28, 2007 3:03 pm

    I agree with Vyoma on the fact that once you start a Tech blog, its the same news to come from all the blogs.
    Why I mentioned it in the interview is that just because there all lot of tech blogs, people who dont know much about technology also get into this game.

    @Mayank,
    There is no harm in starting tech blog if you have a good niche in it. :-)

    @Shashank,
    You said it right! consistency could be the queen. :-)

  18. Vyoma June 28, 2007 3:53 pm

    Consistency is the queen. :) Good one.

    I have been creating good content - so I have the king. But I am having problems with the queen.

    In pursuit of consistency, I have been setting a 2 posts per week at one blog and one post per week in another. I know, I have to increase it. I know I can do it now. But the fear of failing at consistency has been a major hurdle for me - so, I am stuck at the same rate.

  19. benedict herold June 28, 2007 7:09 pm

    @Vyoma, we too are in same boat :-)

  20. Nirmal June 29, 2007 9:52 am

    I would suggest to have min of 4 posts per week to have the queen with you. :-)
    Try it out and let me know if you get the queen. :D

  21. Ramkarthik June 29, 2007 12:25 pm

    I agree with Nirmal. The Suggestions you give here are really good and useful. Thanks for the interview Review Saurus.

  22. Vyoma June 29, 2007 3:16 pm

    @Nirmal, thank for the suggestion.

    Yup. I need to sit down this weekend and chart out something. :)

  23. […] to choose the best of them. However, I chose Shashank’s comment as he said that the consistency is the queen when it comes to blogging and almost everyone agreed to […]

  24. sindhu July 2, 2007 2:31 am

  25. reviewsaurus July 2, 2007 4:27 am

    Yes you are right sindhu! He stays in Manglore only and we all agree to you that he is indeed very nice guy. All good bloggers come from Manglore :D

  26. Nirmal July 2, 2007 5:15 am
