It has been quite some time since I started to blog. Presently, I have two ‘official’ blogs (Splat, KalaaLog) and a personal blog. And having those blogs means I need to keep writing content for them. Sometimes, it becomes hard for us to come up with topics to write about.

Over these months, I have quite a couple of things under my belt that I use to get topics to write about. I thought I would share it with you all. So, expect a small series of tips on choosing topics to blog about. I will try to give my own examples wherever possible.

There are two main things that make or break a blog – content and visibility. These series of posts would be focusing on the content creation. The other side of the coin, in my opinion, Mayank would be the best person to talk about it.

The following list will be updated as the post of the series are updated.

What are the ways you get topics to write about for your blog?

Personally, I just keep my eyes open. Stuff in my life always finds its way into the blog. And of course, I write stuff down before I forget.

I like to get my topics from other blogs. If I feel that someone didn’t cover a topic in detail or may not have the same view as I, then I might do a post about it.

I also like to take situations from my business that I think others are exposed to but might not know how to handle and post up my experience for others to see.

Hey Bush. Yes, that is one of the things I do – I think I have serious problem of amnesia. :P

Hey Marketer! Missed you on the moderation queue.

Filling up the gaps of what others have said is another good one. I usually do it along with a trackback. That keeps the blogosphere from going silent. :)

Trackbacks are one of the most powerful tools most bloggers look over. It’s profitable for both, the blog which sends the trackbacks and the blog which receives ‘em.

It’s also a good way to build readers who just don’t pop in to get some link backs in comments. And I personally always leave back the track if I mention the content which is already published.

The author strictly deserves the mention :)

Great Post Vyoma. I generally write reviews, so I just have to pick up the softwares or websites and I write something or the other about them. But, when it comes to writing a tip or trick or a tutorial then mostly they come with my own experiences.

For e.g. the article which I wrote about the Wireless was my own experience and I thought that it will be wise to share it with others because others may be looking for some help in that section and the comments actually proved it that people liked it :)

I get content ideas randomly :D Sometimes, I go to the delicious homepage, see the popular pages and I get some kind of ‘thought spark’ from those pages. If I’ve nothing to write about, I review a Web 2.0 startup. :D

That is quite natural Madhur. Real life gives us experiences, and experiences precipitate into ideas.

I get content ideas from other blogs and forums. I like to write on what people ask in forums. Once you get questions in comments, then we can blog them. Good idea for a post series, Vyoma.
