We all know that we can easily get pirated softwares from various places on the Internet. There are thousands of underground groups, who create cracks for various software and try to be nice in front of the people. However, the truth is really not that sweet!

I still remember that how my dad used to teach me, that nothing is free in this world (well, although things definitely changed after open-source :P ) but that statement still holds true in lots of things !

Few days back, I wrote a post where I showed you 5 ways of bypassing the Internet Filters and guess what I’ve found another way of accessing the web and that too without using the proxies.

The trick was shared by DJ from Sizlopedia and it says that you just have to make use of text to hex converters like SwingNote. What you have to do is that go to SwingNote and in the conversion box, type the URL of the blocked service as shown in this example :

Let’s say YouTube is banned in your company and you want to access it then simply type youtube.com (don’t include http:// or www or anything like that) and click submit.

wikia-search Wikia Search is the latest search engine in the block and is getting lot of buzz these days. Almost each and every blogger high profile blogger has covered (Matt Cutts, Michael Arrington, Rafe Needleman are among few). Wikia Search – The human powered search engine. Yes, that’s what Wikia search is about.

It’s a service which combines search algorithm with human efforts with the *hope* of building a better search engine and which can really give competition to the search engine giant I.e. Google!

Now, lets see how Wikia works :

Wikia Search will index the web pages from the web and later the users will give rating to the search results and that will eventually help in the improving (I wanted to write demolishing but Jimmy Wales, founder of WikiPedia thinks that it will improve) the search results.

What is against Wikia :

Well, personally I think it’s a great idea and it really should be the case that people can decide that what is more legitimate and should stand at the top in the results but do you really think that will happen ?

I think it will end up being like Digg! A mob of people who’ll decide that what’ll stay on the top and what’ll stay behind. Apart from that, the chances are that some SEM companies will hire many people and will ask them to manipulate the search results for the benefit of their clients.

Jimmy Wales himself says that one can’t expect great search results from Wikia from the day 1 (fair enough) and says that it will take around 2 years for Wikia to reach to a level where it will be able to yield search results competitive to current search engine ruler (as seen on RLSlog). Well, not expecting great results on the day 1 is completely acceptable but c’mon, 2 years to be able to be where Google is right now is completely useless!

Why will people work hard for Wikia for next 2 years, when Google is already giving the same search results which we can expect from Wikia, 2 years from now!

screensaver-maker Screensavers definitely attract us and we all want to have some cool looking or personalized screensavers for our computers. There are many screensavers available for us to download but there are people like me who like to have personalized or custom screensavers and for them there are many utilities which can help in creating the screensavers pretty easily and no programming knowledge is required for that.

Here are some of the software which can help you in creating custom screensavers :

1. InstaSaver : It’s a web application which can help you in creating the screensavers pretty easily. Just upload the pictures (at the max 10 & not more than 512 Kb/image) or import them from Flickr and then it creates the installer for you to download. Thilak has done a good review of InstaSaver and suggests that although, it isn’t the best but yes, it certainly is fun little web application.

2. ScreenSwift : allows you to create installable flash screensavers. The screensavers can be highly customized and it can make any swf file as a screensaver. The software allows you to add mp3 files for background music and much more. It’s free but in case you want to sell screensavers, then you need to buy a licensed version which costs around $ 69.95. Download ScreenSwift.

3. PhotoMeister : is a great freeware when it comes to doing various things with your photos. It lets you make screensavers, export them as PDF, create web albums, create multimedia CDs, DVDs. Download PhotoMeister.

4. WebGobbler : is a wonderful image mixer which crawls the web for various images and then creates a collage for you. You can create screensavers from your own photos, which look like a piece of art! Download WebGobbler.

pdf-xchange-viewer Long back (in my blogger days), I’d covered Foxit Reader (a fast and free alternative to Adobe Reader) and I was fairly impressed with it. The software opened pretty fast and did the job really well. After a long time, I’m now reviewing another PDF reader software called PDF Xchange Viewer.

Well, there is only one word which comes in my mind after using the software and testing it and I.e. Excellent!

The software not only opens faster than Adobe reader, it also allows you to put sticky notes, add text to the PDF documents (which can further be seen with any other reader) and yes, it remembers the page where you closed the document last time!

It’s Great! It has all the features of Adobe Reader plus it has few more extra but still I would have felt really great if I could say It’s Complete! Unfortunately, it isn’t.

I would love to see in PDF XChange Viewer :
