faroo I’m completely convinced that Peer to peer software have the capability of expanding fast provided they can offer something useful to us. Napster, Skype, Limewire and there are hundreds of p2p based software which have shined on Internet and are still providing excellent services.

Faroo is one such attempt which is aimed at building a search engine empire using the resources provided by people like you and me. Faroo’s technology and idea is impressive as they make you free from security worries. They are hitting on the strong point of Google i.e. organizing world’s information at one place (the point, which has helped Google till this time).

When I look around my world on the internet, it really revolves around Google a lot as I have my email service maintained by them, I bow in front of their search engine, all my personal information is with them (thanks to Calendar, Google checkout and various other services) and when I think that what will happen if at all they block my account for some crappy reason or what if they decide to hand over the data some govt. as they are not allowing its services to be run in their country.

There are many program launchers for Windows, some allow you to access the programs through taskbar, some through system tray, some hover at the top of the screen and some can be accessed by typing couple of words and then it displays you the applications name and you get to access the application (just like QuickSilver for Mac). I love the last way as, I use keyboard more than mouse and just don’t like to click on the buttons.

12 January 2008

Long back, I’d written that how you can run linux (ubuntu) in windows environment, now it’s time to run gOS on Windows. In the earlier post, I’d shown that how you can use VMware Player to run the Linux on Windows environment however, it required a little bit of work as you can’t create virtual hard disk with VMware Player.

Anyway, This time it becomes really easy as you just have to download VirtualBox, a virtualization software and install it.

If 5GB offered by AOL is not enough and you want to do a rapid file sharing, then here comes PodMailing, a software that allows you to send really huge emails, of any size you want.

podmailing-logo PodMailing is a software application that you will have to download from here. Once you get the software, the initial setup is pretty simple. All you need to do is give in you original email id and your name so that the recipient knows the huge file is from you and can reply to your id incase necessary.

So what does PodMailing do?

Once you finish the initial setup, you can compose an email just the way you normally do. Then to this email you can attach a file of any size. Once you do this, the software uploads this file onto its server and sends a link of the address of upload to the recipients. So they get to start downloading it from the server.

Not only that, it also uses the torrent technique (refer Wikipedia for more on torrents). Once people start downloading the file, they also upload a small part of the same file. So the burden on the original source is drastically reduced and therefore the transfer happens very quickly. And also, they can start downloading even before you have fully finished your upload. However if your network permits, you might get the file directly from the sender.

What if you have to Shut Down your computer in the middle of a transfer?

Both the sender and the receiver might not be able to continuously send or receive the huge file. So if a shut down has to happen, the transfer will automatically resume once the computer is switched on.
