MS Office is without a doubt the best office suite ever built and continues to get better and better with every new version. Be it the Office for Windows or MS Office ‘08 for Mac, it really is a wonder on both the platforms. However, the hefty price attached with it, gives nightmare to most of us or few people take the road of using pirated version of this beautiful package.

However, we don’t need to stick to MS Office anymore and we don’t need to use a pirated copy of it, when we can get all the features of it by using various open-source software and which work on almost all the platforms.

1. OpenOffice.Org : This wonderful open-source package can handle most of the work for us, which MS Office can do. Spreadsheet, Word Documents, Powerpoint presentations, Base (which is the alternative to MS Access), Math (alternative to Microsoft’s Equation editor). However, MS Office suite is much more than these applications only and we’ll find out that which other applications can help us over here.

2. MS Outlook alternatives : OpenOffice.Org misses an email client & Organizer which is basically known as Outlook in MS Office package. We can use two programs from Mozilla which solve our problem. One is ThunderBird (the email client) and SunBird (the calendar or organizer). These two programs are good enough that you won’t miss MS Outlook at all.

crossloop-logo.jpg CrossLoop has announced it’s monetization strategy and one of the most impressive work I’ve ever seen in the remote screen sharing market. There are various remote screen sharing software and services and they all tend to charge you for using their service. However, CrossLoop has come up with a different model altogether, where it lets you earn money out of it!

CrossLoop has released the marketplace where help seekers can go ahead and find a technician and pay them the price which has been set up by the technician in return of the service provided by the technician. After releasing the profiles, it seemed a little certain that crossloop will go in this direction, when it will come to making money out of this service.

transmission-bt-logo.jpgAfter switching to Mac, I’d downloaded some of the most recommended software and Transmission is one software which has been recommended by each and everyone when it comes to torrents and Mac OS X.

Transmission is an excellent open source software and it’s simplicity makes it favorite of every torrent user on Mac OS X.

The software is pretty simple and as soon as you add the torrent it lets you select that which all files you want to download and where would you like to store the files. It lets you easily limit the upload or download speed and gives you the option of stop seeding when Transmission reaches certain share ratio.

Good thing about this software is that it gives you the access to the commonly used features right under 1 or 2 clicks and if you want to access the advanced information then you can always choose the option to do so.

Alright, here comes my first ever screencast. I know it didn’t come out to be the best and certainly was one of the worst attempt but hey, we all learn with times. Well, in this screen cast I’ve shown a very simple trick of how to quickly lock the screen in OS X. In Windows it’s pretty simple, we just have to press Window Key + L and the screen gets locked.

However, there is no such shortcut in OS X, so I’d to make use of the screensaver and the Hot corners. Check out the 1 min. video and see that how we can quickly lock the screen in OS X.

tigerlaunch.jpgWhen I switched to Mac the biggest problem I faced was that there was no launcher (read Start menu in Windows) and I’d big problem in launching the applications. QuickSilver definitely solved the problem and then I came across ToDos.

However, I still was looking for a better launcher which gave the feel of Start Menu and just then I came across TigerLaunch.

TigerLaunch is an open-source software (around 120 Kb only) and which gives you a launcher menu at the top (where you have the time, battery information etc.).

The utility is light weight and extremely useful as it displays all the applications under one menu. It allows you to add various folder where you may have installed the applications and thus not only it’ll scan the known places but you can customize it to your needs.

I’ll say that it’s one of the best utility for Mac OS X and one of the most useful ones too. It’s a must have for every OS X user!
