10 features which I want the most in GTalk!

GTalk, which needs lots of updates and that’s been said every now and then. The reason for that is because the widget of GTalk has got more features as compared to the main application. Most of the users are not happy because there has been no update from long time and I’m amongst those users. However, these are the features which I would love to see in GTalk in the next update :

1. Group chat & Conference calls : Group chat is now a feature of Google Talk’s gadget but still it is missing from the main application and GMail Chat. It is a much needed feature and many people will just fall in love with it, if it gets this feature.

2. Grouping of Friends : If I can group friends in GMail, then why not in GTalk. GTalk and GMail share the contact book, then group feature should be part of GTalk as well.

3. Support for emoticons : We have to accept that we all love smilies and so, it will be wise to have better smilies instead of the text based ones only. At least, smilies which are in GMail are also better than the GTalk’s smilies.

4. Better text formatting : There is no harm if GTalk will allow simple text formatting. Sometimes I wish that I get the facility of making the text bold and that too without the use of asterisk (*). If you type any text in between two * then it becomes bold in GTalk. For e.g. *Hi* then it will look like Hi.

5. Video conferencing : Well, if Google wants to define the communication then where’s the harm in providing free Video calls ? It is also much needed feature, although not everyone is dying for it, but with Video feature, it will become a complete solution and many people will start using it more often.

So, that sums up the list of features which I would love to see in the next update (if at all there is any) of GTalk.

Hang on! That’s just Five Features and you said 10!

Oh! I thought that rest Five features you’ll be telling me :)

I can’t think of any more than you’ve said, I really do think we need a good video conference thing though, with more than 2 people in a conversation with their webcams streaming. That’d be cool.

cant think of other 5, but 5 features i want would be:

@ Joel : It seems that video conference is one thing which everyone else wants too! Google are you listening????

@ Vaibhav : Ah that’s interesting Orkut and Google reader updates! Well, Orkut scraps come up as updates in Gtalk, so that’s fine but Google Reader updates, well, if you could explain it further. It seems something interesting and if Google has got some API then I’m sure some developer will be interested in that!

  5. Group chat would be a great feature. I’d also love to have smiley support :D

Never really needed video conferencing :P

  6. Joel says:

ShakarGanesh, Video conferencing isn’t something I need, but I think group video sessions with friends would be a lot more fun than just the 1v1 that we’re limited to with IM programs

  7. Brown Baron says:

@ Shankar : I agree with Joel that its not a feature which one would die for but it can be always helpful in some situations and Group chat is the most asked feature…so I think no point in making any comment about it.

these make gtalk a google-branded windows live messenger.

  15. ReviewSaurus says:

@ Jansen : Ah! what an excellent way of saying that you want all the features of Windows live messenger in GTalk. I can only hope that Google Guys may be reading this :)

  16. I think, I can’t add more features here. Everyone has said a lot about it. But do you the only reason why I love Gtalk? It is simpler without above features. Once everything is added to them it will be another yahoo messenger scrambled with lot features.
