It seemed to me that Google wasn’t really keen to make Orkut look really the standard of the social networks. They were happy enough to see it growing in Brazil and India and were enjoying its success or may be they were worried about the various political pressures from these countries; call it Brazil’s orders of checking the data or India’s small groups’ constant rebels against Orkut or may be women having problems in using Orkut in India.
But, now it seems that they are out of the success of Orkut in these countries and want to make it more global and want to expand in other countries too. It’s good to see them improve the design of Orkut and that they are thinking of releasing the APIs and that they want to share the social data with developers.
This move will certainly make Orkut the most hot product in the social network market, reason being that it’s from Google and we know that developers love Google and that makes it more and more useful and because of that Google becomes user choice.

I’m not entirely convinced that Google have got their collective heads around Social Networking and Social Media, which might be part of the reason that Orkut has languished.
However, it’s worth mentioning how Yahoo! OurCity was first piloted in India before being trotted out globally.
If anything, Google is often very deliberate about it’s testing phases. So for all we know, the political issues in Brazil and India could have been a planned-for response that Google wished to test Orkut against…
