You may have noticed that my blog posting frequency dipped and same goes with comments too. It’s not that I’m short of any blog posts (I review softwares and there are endless softwares which I can review).

The reason for the absence was that I was constantly trying hard to install Linux on my computer. Well, to be honest I was able to install Linux (Ubuntu) but couldn’t make the internet connection work

I’m very new to Linux but thanks to Google, I was able to find out the relevant articles all the time and with their help, I got to install the Wireless card on this Linux Distro (Although, my Wireless card (Netgear WG311v3) doesn’t have any Linux drivers). I made use of ndiswrapper to install the windows drivers on the Ubuntu Linux.

However, still it failed to work properly and that’s most likely because of poor signal quality. I think because, the drivers are not of Linux (they may not be doing which they are supposed to do) and the signal strength is poor so that’s why it isn’t working properly.

Although, I’ll go through various other articles and support forums to make sure that it works properly and won’t give up un till it gets working, but will ensure that because of this the posting frequency will not dip.

Hmmm! If you manage to make it work, you should do the linux installation review! That would be a valuable one! :)

@ Ken : Well, with every intention of writing the article, I was trying this. But, it seems that its just not going to work for me. But, still I’ll see what can be done to get it done.

@ Arpit : Well, I’ve already tried VMware player and I even wrote the article on that once. It’s just that I wanted to make sure that if I can make my computer a freeware hub. I was inclined to install the complete installation and did the dual boot.

Hmmm. That is odd. I remember using Ubuntu when I was back in Chennai – the net connection worked right out of the box for me.

@ Shankar : Which internet connection do you use? Which modem or hardware device you use to connect to the internet?

@ Vyoma : Depends on the hardware you were using :)

@ Vijay : Well, it is the wireless card! There are no official drivers for linux from netgear and that’s why I had to use the ndiswrapper and unfortunately still no joy :(

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) on numerous computers with wired and wireless cards and never had a network issue. Wired were various PCI manufactures and including chip sets on the motherboard. Wireless were Motorola, Linksys and USR in desktops and I've never had any problems with built in wireless adapters or external USB adapters on any laptops detecting and installing the proper drivers. What version of Ubuntu did you try installing?
