We are using MediaTemple as our web host and our sites were down for almost 9 hrs. ! Now, that’s not good thing if you are using a premium web host but still, I’ll say that it’s better that one should MediaTemple and here’s the reason :
MediaTemple had already informed us that there is a scheduled maintenance of around 6 hrs. however, due to some complications the downtime increased to 3 more hrs. Of course, I felt bad about it, however, my patience level kept me from ranting and whining about it. I wanted to ask for some compensation however, I just kept myself patient enough because I understand that *shit* happens!

However, after that next day I received an email which said that I’ve been given 2 months of free hosting as a compensation. I know it can be a huge loss to those who are making good money from their blogs but this incident suggests that they care about their clients.
These are some of the points which we can take up from this incident (both positives and negatives) :
1. There was a long downtime of 9 hours. (They were polite, informed us before hand and accepted their fault.)
2. Provided the 2 months of free hosting.
I’m glad I’m not one of those unhappy customers and didn’t have that bad experience as far as Ram of TeknoBites had.
Here are few other people, who are glad that they are using MediaTemple as their hosting service :
1. Jon Holato
2. Terence Chang
3. Arghyle
I know that web hosting is one of those sections where people prefer the uptime and it makes sense too, but with MediaTemple’s past record (at least for me) has been extremely good and I’m all the way happy with them. Thank you Media Temple!
If you are looking for a web host. I’ll highly recommend Media Temple. It’s bit costly (as compared to others but it gives you peace of mind too!) but has good support and customer service.

:D, mayank it so true that one who is thinking of even going with dream host might not go for it. great to hear that media temple provided 2 months of free hosting with 9 hours of downtime..
How about BlueHost? They aren’t bad either.
Hey i had bad experience with dreamhost for one of mysite. my blog is hosted at MT but i didn’t get the 2 months compensation.
Thank you for the link.
To clarify my hosting services. My TerenceChang.com is hosted on ANHosting.com. I can afford to have my personal blog going down for few hours, but I can’t afford to have my commercial web site goes down for one minutes.
So I have commercial web site hosted on MT. I hope this makes it clear.
@Haris & @Ram: Both dreamhost and bluehost don’t have dedicated server plan. For shared hosting, ANHosting is a lot of better than those two. What ANHosting have while other don’t is that I can upgrade from my Shared Hosting to Dedicated hosting with almost no downtime.
Think about switching from one hosting provider to the other? That’s really pain in the neck. So I pick the hosting company that I have chance to growth with.
Good luck on all your hosting sites.
@ Vaibhav : Yeah I’m glad that they did it :) Some time patience pays !
@ Haris : Not sure about bluehost. I have no experience with them. i’ve heard good things about them but I just couldn’t take chance with any service.
@ Ram : well, just email them politely but they won’t give it to you if you were not hit by the scheduled downtime.
@ Terence : Well, I read the whole post and knew that you were hosted at ANHosting. Well, as far as your point which is about hosting the business sites or the sites which are critical are concerned then I can say that if my blog network grows then I’ll probably switch to MT’s better plans instead of the GS plan.
Thanks for the reference and I’m glad you’re happy with Media Temple. It’s by far the greatest Web host out there. Their performance is nothing but stellar and their customer service is excellent. :)
Mayank,
MT is undoubtedly one of the best, but I have a few points to tell here.
1. MT has given you 2 months extra, but I would still prefer the 9 hours they cut for a blog as readers are important for me.
2. MT is very very costly for a blogger, may be established bloggers like you can afford, for me its out of reach with $240 per year.
3. And with this $240 per year, 9 hours of downtime is unacceptable. For me bluehost has not given me more than 0.5 hour of downtime in the past 5 months or so.
4. MT support is not that great, (not my experience), I had read in Arpit’s blog.
Well I dont say one host is best and others are not good, we need to compare host based on the value for money they give.
$240 per year and 9 hours of downtime is not acceptable for me under any circumstances, even if they give me one year free.
Just my thought! :-)
