Read Receipt is feature, which gives you a notification that the email sent by you has been read by the recipient. Nirmal explains to us the procedure of enabling the Read Receipt for a message in Microsoft Outlook. Now, lets look at the ways of enabling the Read Receipt feature in other email clients :

In Outlook Express 6 :

Go to Tools -> Options -> Receipts tab & then click on Request a read receipt for all sent messages.

In Thunderbird 2.0 :

Go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced tab -> Return Receipts button -> tick When sending messages, always request a return receipt.

    There seems to be a bit of confusion about read receipts and delivery receipts. Its my understanding that a return receipt indicates that the email server has delivered the message but it does not indicated that the message has been read.

    Its important to understand what you are trying to achieve with these headers and really understand how they work in order to use them effectively.
