Get the windows 2000 search in Windows XP!

Windows XP‘s search has that search assistant which sometimes can be bug and freak us out. At least, I don’t like that a lot and this is one of the reasons that I shifted to Copernic Desktop Search. However, if you are not interested in installing any other software and if you were happy with Windows 2000 like search then by playing with registry (Caution : Playing with registry is not cool and it may harm your computer), you can throw away the search assistant.

Here’s what you need to do :

1. Open the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows CurrentVersionExplorerCabinetState.
3. Go to Edit | New | String Value.
4. Name the new value Use Search Asst.
5. Double-click the new value, type no in the Value Data text box, and click OK.
6. Close the Registry Editor, and restart the system.

If at all, you decide that you want the assistant back, then perform the steps mentioned above till step 2 and then delete the new String value which we created in step 3 & 4.
