Malware are mostly installed on to your computer through Internet. It can be any website (even the legitimate ones) which can potentially harm your computer. Well, you may ask me that how come legitimate site affect your system and here’s my answer in an example :

virus Websites run ads and many websites depend on ad-networks to manage the ad-inventory of their websites. Now, imagine that some ad-network sells the ad to one of the advertiser which potentially may be distributing such a malware or may be because of some compromised web application (some hacker may have infected their website) and once you click on that ad you have possible chance of getting infected!

Now, that you are convinced that each and every website on Internet can be a potential harm for your computer, I’ll tell you that how you can try and be safe from these harms…

Before I start, I would like to remind you that NO service, NO software (I repeat – NO service, NO software) can save you completely. These services can serve better with your browsing habits and with help of your common sense. Now let’s see what we can do to be safe :

These are some of the tips you can follow or what I call smart browsing :

  1. Ensure that you don’t go to crack/serial providing sites.
  2. Always use Internet security packages which include Anti-virus, Firewall
  3. Use Firefox or Opera (not that I’m against Internet Explorer, it’s just that there are lots and lots of exploits for Internet Explorer).
  4. Use browser add-ons like LinkScanner Lite, HauteSecure or McAfee Site advisor.
  5. Don’t get trapped in those ads showcasing hot chicks!
  6. Don’t download and install softwares which have not be recommended on the internet. A simple search on the web will give you idea, if that software is worth something or not.
  7. Never open any suspicious attachment. Don’t even think of opening any greeting card of funny joke whose extension is .exe

Well, these are some of the tips which should keep you happy and safe on the internet. Remember, it’s really the common sense which can help you the maximum.
