Social networking is definitely hot and all the big shots like Myspace, Bebo, Facebook, Orkut are doing extremely good and are looked as one of the biggest money makers. These are not the only sites which are into providing social networking but there are many others and new and new social networks are coming up with something different or targeting a specific community. In India, Yaari.com & DesiMartini are the some of the websites which are targeting the ever increasing interent population of India (in social network market) but Orkut is still ruling the hearts of Indians and still the number social networking website in India.
Now, Reliance Anil Dhiru Bhai Ambani’s entertainment section has come up with a social networking website called Big Adda (Adda is a Hindi word which means hang out place). Big Adda looks much more cleaner as compared to Yaari & DesiMartini & they’ve got almost all the features of a social networking website like blogs, photos, videos and communities and have done a pretty neat job (One can expect from Reliance ADA) but the problem is that they’ve not brought anything new which will actually attract the mob from Orkut or other competitors.
Yaari took the help of Apple IPOD Nano’s but Big Adda is not looking interested in any thing like that, I guess they should make use of ADLABS (another venture of Reliance ADA) to attract the section of Indian society which is crazy about movies and bollywood or they may give out prizes and goodies related to films and they’ll be able to attract lots of youngsters and the good thing about it is that Reliance ADA can do it easily as they are not dependent on funds at least. What do you think, can Big Adda be the number 1 Social networking site in India or not?

I did read about BigAdda few days back and also about ADAG’s money into it.One thing which is out of my reach is “Why only Social Networking” being targetted and why not business networking? The opnly option to LinkedIn and Ryze in India is TechTribe which is not only popular and excellent as well.Also,Orkut which has such a large user base as Indians won’t leave it and hence difficult for Big Adda to get more traffic.
I think question should be “Why not business networking?”
What is your take on this?
Just a small joke “I guess BigAdds has to give some of it’s initial users a RIL mobile phone than they would get more traffic…At least I would regsiter for the same :)”

Business networking is good option as you mentioned about TechTribe but again that’s specific to a niche and targeting a special community but Big Adda is not targeting a special community, they want to keep it open for everyone and I guess there is no problem in that but I’m sure that they’ll find it easier if they target a community.
That’s why I mentioned about the movies and ADLABS because movies and bollywood is one of the most popular area and Big Adda will definitely find lots and lots of users in that section to target.

Big Adda is kool, it might do well considering the kind of budgets they might have to promote Big Adda, but its too early let them come to Beta stage and lets see then, lets see them cross first 5 Million genuine users….

Well, even I think that Reliance can make it big as its reliance :) They just seem to make money from each and everything without fail. Lets hope they become big as, its really important for India too, there’s hardly any Indian website amongst big known websites!
Well, I’ve got no idea about bigadda.in I guess they’ll just surrender to reliance.
Bigadda looks promising, lets wait and see if it can become a success. :-)

@ Jasmine : Well, I’ve not noticed any ads yet. May be, they’re waiting to see how things go by word of mouth of just the social networking invitations and then they’ll make the marketing budget.

well as for as for a web expert i don’t think big adda will win, because they are using an open source script which is not too much secure, i have been developing this script called phpizabi over months, and finall i left it because it will too unsecured sites has been hacked user email passwords gone, and alot more like,
what they could do is get a better script or website application for their site, and if they have good fund and patience i don’t know why they didn’t develop their own community code, rather then using a cheap and unsecured application.
biggada is not safe they are using phpizabi which means your userid passworkd email friends every thing can be hacked and sold,
@ Sunil : I’m not sure about your source of information but if you could show us some facts that BigAdda is operating on this script then it will certainly be a wrong factor on Reliance ADAG’s part.
But I really doubt that they’ll be making such a stupid mistake and I’m sure any other will also not believe it.
It is surprising to know that they are using PHPIZABI.

I use this open source for my small networking site, but I dont think that it is a good idea for such a site.
@ Mark : Well, it completely depends on how you take open source software or scripts. I think if we talk about OpenOffice.Org then you’ll say that it is the best office solution because it is free and open source. Ask any blogger and he’ll say that WordPress is a great software because not only it is open source but powerful too.
I don’t see any harm in using an Open Source script if they can make full use of it and I’ll say that they’ve done a good job in modifying the code to their needs and make it look better than many social networks.
I agree with you. I dont have any problem with open source, in fact I mostly use open source. But I think PHPIZABI is still not a mature application. The community for it is also not as active as wordpress, Drupal or Joomla. I really wish PHPIZABI scales up soon. But in social networking OS scripts available this is good enough.
Hey, bigada could modify the script more to change the directory structures. It’s quite easy for any one to steal their theme and look at what’s inside. I don’t think any big site like bigadda should have used the opensource scripts like phpizabi. They could have developed their own.
I would like these websites to be good internet samaritans and have a policy that if somebody keeps inviting totally strangers on their website and if they get multiple reports to confirm that, sender is banned from their website.
I think 90% of them are going to be closed down within a year. Also most of them seem to lure users by offering either free iPods or free SMSs. They all are trying same things, same way and obviously all of them can’t be successful doing the same things as dozen others.
