finjan-secure-browsing Finjan is one of the latest security tool for Firefox and is one the must have install add-on according to me. It scans the websites in real time and tells you if the site is safe or not. It gives the suggestion on the Google Search, links mentioned in the web mails or basically any outgoing link on any page, if that page is safe to visit or not. I found this tool really helpful and will suggest every Firefox user to install rather I think it should be the default feature of Firefox.

Anyway, nothing is perfect and nor Finjan is and here are some of the improvements I’ll suggest to Finjan :

1. It doesn’t work for some pages : I’ve noticed that it doesn’t scan the outgoing links from some of the pages. I recently checked Technorati’s Top 100 blogs and it failed to show the status of those outgoing links. Anyway, I copied all the links and sent to myself in email and then it showed me the result and I was surprised to see that 3 blogs in that list were Malicious and those top blog which it showed as Malicious were : TreeHugger, DoshDosh & InstaPundit. Now, I’ll say that these are one of my regularly read blogs and none of them poses any security threat but it may be some of the JavaScript which may be causing the Finjan SecureBrowing to trigger the red alert.

Down below is the screenshot of all the blogs and their status :

2. It doesn’t tell you that which part is causing the problem : I’m glad that it tells us that which website causes problems but it fails to tell us exactly that what is the exact reason of the problem. I’m sure it will help webmasters to find out the problem and rectify it quickly. At least, those blogger’s who are really not techie will find it really useful.

3. It only displays the information about the links on the current page : It gives the security information about the links which are on the page you are viewing but it doesn’t tell you anything about the page you are viewing. I would like to see an indication if the page we are looking at is Green or not !

I’m sure if these issues can be addressed by Finjan then this plug-in will get all the praises which it still deserves!

That seems very strange. I visited DoshDosh before and nothing happened to my computer. I think the 3 blogs will be pretty unhappy!

Well, as I said that I love to visit these blogs myself and nothing happens to your computer. Its just that these blogs may be using some javascript which may be taking some information or browsing habits from your browser and that may be triggering Finjan security!

These blogs are part of top 100 blogs and they do deserve this position, its just that these blogs will need to carefully check that which scripts they are using.

Wow! Got to inform Maki about that! It’s so bad if DoshDosh.com is having a malicious code.

We need to find you the exact reason its termed as malicious, sometimes it could be because of the fact that some script is causing the issue? We never know abt these.

@ Ken : I’m sure he’ll be glad to remove that javascript and I’m sure it will surely help him.

@ Ashish : Even I believe so. But, its duty of webmaster too, to take of the kind of javascripts which we are using…isn’t it?

@ Pearl : Hey why to blame technorati for this ? Technorati is just listing the top 100 blogs and I think those blogs deserve this position because they are actually the best in respective ways.

@ Keith : Use the plugin and by looking at the code only one can find out why the blog was termed as malicious.

@ Nirmal : well, I’m sure it is because of the scripts only, I’m sorry to say but your blog is also showing up as Malicious :(

Mayank… something seems to be not working in technorati’s algorithms because in my dashboard, I’ll see four or five links coming from other blogs and when i go to those blogs, they haven’t linked to me, and in the blog reactions on technorati, I’ve seen strange things happening… and I love those blogs, believe me – THAT is why i said technorati is messed up :)

BTW, I’ve been on technorati wayy before you joined it Dino .. so, its not like I don’t have a special love for them! But if you are offended, i take that back :) :P
