Desktop Music: Create music on your desktop!

Desktop Music is a music engine that helps beginners create some easy and fast music. The opening window that welcomes the user is a soothing one with the 6 octaves of the keyboard at the lower pane, a note window at the top right and the options on the top left. The options on the left may look geeky for any beginner, but not a problem as one can create music in this software without knowing the technical aspects of music.

Creation of music is child’s play (pun intended!) Press the keyboard keys with the mouse and you are started! And the keys can be played in five types of piano sounds and an equal number of guitar sounds plus mandolin, tenor, ukulele and my favorite musical instrument ever invented the bass guitar. Selecting any of the stringed instruments replaces the keyboard with a simulation of the strings of the guitar. Each instrument can be selected from the tabs above and the respective properties like volume, delay and transpose are displayed below the keyboard which can be changed easily.

The special feature in this program is the drums option on the keyboard. Selecting the tab removes the keyboard and replaces it with a drum machine like graphics. Everything is just placing the required sound on the pattern editor against the desired drum sound like kick, snare etc.

The editor window displays the respective notes only when the respective instruments are selected on the keyboard. The play all function does what it suggests – it plays all the notes of different notes saved under each instrument together.

The chord calculator is probably the best feature of this program. It detects the correct note and displays a list of chords that may go well with the tune of the song. Quite useful to a person like me who hasn’t had formal training in music, but performs professionally.

Final Verdict :

This software has got plenty for the person who has trained in western music, but again is not fit for the professional. This is more for lighter purposes like learning or just playing for fun.
