Ok, here’s the new update! I’m done with Kubuntu and have decided that I won’t be using it again. The reasons why I decided not to use Kubuntu :
1. Crashed a lot (even had updated it to the latest version).
2. The screen resolution always switched itself back to 1600X1200.
3. Didn’t boot properly after an improper shutdown and had to run fsck regularly.
Now, after seeing the sad end of my experience with Kubuntu, I didn’t lose hope and guess what my journey to test Linux isn’t over yet. I’m using Ubuntu now!
I’ve been using Ubuntu from last night and haven’t come any problem since so the only conclusion I can make at this point of time is that it was not the fault of Kubuntu but in reality the KDE was giving me all the problems.
What I liked about Gnome :
Although, Gnome doesn’t have as eye candy effects as KDE has but I’m more happy with Gnome as it gives me the feeling as if I’m using Windows and I find it more user friendly.
The problems, I’m facing till this time with Ubuntu :
1. There is no good desktop blogging client for Linux. At least, no one which can compete with Windows Live Writer.
2. To encounter the problem of having no good blogging desktop client, I decided that I’ll use Wine but unfortunately, as soon as I start Wine, the computer hangs and I’ve to restart the computer (fortunately, Ubuntu boots without any problem and I don’t have to run fsck).
3. There is no screen capturing software for Linux. At least, no one close to Snagit.

The best Linux blogging client I found is Scribe – the firefox extension.
For screen capture, I use KSnapshot – but thats a KDE application.
Anyway, best of luck with Ubuntu.
I cant imagine how you guys get the courage to keep experimenting with linux. The worst thing which hit me is reinstalling the OS, as i have to install all the application again. its really so damm hectic. dont you guys think so ???
If Wine crashes your computer, you probably have a kernel or hardware
problem. First thing to check is any proprietary video drivers — if you have a
nvidia driver that doesn’t exactly match your kernel, it can crash
the system as soon as wine (or any opengl app, say, glxgears) runs.
Does glxgears run ok for you?
@ Dan : here’s what I get after running glxgears :
935 frames in 5.0 seconds = 186.975 FPS
982 frames in 5.0 seconds = 196.317 FPS
1018 frames in 5.0 seconds = 203.463 FPS
1869 frames in 5.0 seconds = 373.723 FPS
3314 frames in 5.0 seconds = 662.771 FPS
4808 frames in 5.5 seconds = 881.563 FPS
1530 frames in 5.2 seconds = 295.357 FPS
3994 frames in 5.0 seconds = 798.792 FPS
4102 frames in 5.0 seconds = 820.308 FPS
971 frames in 5.0 seconds = 194.068 FPS
994 frames in 5.0 seconds = 198.728 FPS
12528 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2505.563 FPS
20048 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4009.427 FPS
8707 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1740.495 FPS
1867 frames in 5.0 seconds = 373.336 FPS
1937 frames in 5.0 seconds = 387.369 FPS
1937 frames in 5.0 seconds = 387.377 FPS
1931 frames in 5.0 seconds = 386.037 FPS
Is that OK ?
@ kanak : no! it’s not difficult when you’ve done the dual boot :)
Secondly, you don’t need the courage to use Linux. It’s actually super cool. After a long time, I felt that I’m getting some challenge to use the OS and that’s one thing I love! I love to troubleshoot and play with OSes and unfortunately windows stopped giving me that feeling. I was very comfortable in using it and that’s not what I like :)
This is bad news for all Linux users, I wanted to switch over to Ubuntu for a while.
There is blogging software for Linux. Check out my latest post for details- Bleezer. Scribe extension is also good.
@ Nirmal : You didn’t read the post properly at first :P well, going through bleezer , downloaded it and hopefully it will satisfy me to some level. WLW made me depend on it. I wish someone could port it on Linux or create something equivalent to it.
WLW for linux…interesting….will microsoft let that happen? :) something equivalent is always good to look upon though…
@Mayank,
I had read your post and what I meant was switching over to Linux and not particularly Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
@ Nirmal : I was just pulling the leg nothing else :) I got your idea behind that comment.
Thanks for pointing out that blog editor but unfortunately it isn’t close to WLW :(
