Eraser - Delete the files securely!

  21 Oct 2007 by Shashank

What’s Deleted is not Erased!

File deletion too can sometimes prove to be quite cumbersome. Imagine when you are are on a disk cleaning drive and need to delete lots of files on different folders. Your fingers in that case are in for some hard work. Also, when you think that you have deleted a file (even if by pressing shift+del), all your OS has actually done is to remove the reference of that file from the file system table. The file data actually remains on the disk until another set of data is overwritten. Expert in data recovery can in fact recover even that overwritten data. Thus in case you have some data that is too personal, file deletion can be a security concern too.

The Software

Its all in the name! Eraser is a secure file deletion tool for Windows which enables you to delete data from your hard disk COMPLETELY. It does so by not only carrying the normal deletion function but also overwriting the data on the hard disk several times so that its recovery becomes impossible by any method.

Pros of Eraser

+ Complete Data removal
+ Scheduling of cleaning action
+ Use of wildcards to select files saves a lot of time
+ Creates a report after every task

Cons of Eraser

I couldn’t find any. I tried recovering the files using the data recovery software and I was happy to see the results.

Bottom Line

If you are one of those people, who wants to remove the file and ensure that they can’t be retrieved by anyone else then this is the software you need. But, if you don’t have any sensitive data then SHIFT + DELETE will serve the purpose.

Nice tool boy, but regular use of it on your disk might let to some bad sectors. good to use it some times, if you wanna delete some seriously personal data.

  3. [...] File recovery when tested by me provided a long list of files that I did not know when and how had been deleted from my system along with those that I had deleted deliberately to test it. So there is no doubt that the software is reliable and efficient under normal conditions. However do not expect it restore files that have been deleted using a secure file deletion tool. [...]
