FL Slayer: Master the strings!

  06 Feb 2008 by Sathya Narain | , ,

logo Want to compose rock and don’t know how to even hold a guitar. Relax. All you need is Fl Studio with the FL Slayer plugin. Originally developed by reFX, this plugin opens a cool looking interface that sets one’s eyes on fire!

A realistic set of six strings that makes the user to move his mouse up and down; it doesn’t work though. One has to open the piano roll editor and paint the notes as required and viola – you have your first guitar solo! Options given are Auto chords, power chords, strumming among other things and various knobs are given using which one can tweak tone, fret, slap, feedback, harmony, drive, presence etc. I am not going to tell you what each knob does. I suggest you run the plugin and use it and tweak the knobs yourself and I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised you get the various sounds as rock stars play on stage!

FLSlayer Other options that are included are strings(Noise, slap, ebass, fret etc.) and coils(single, double and none) Also two pitch bends along with four Amp and Cabinet choices offer a wide range of editing options.

The various types of guitars that one can ‘play’ using FL Slayer are rhythm, metal, rock, natural(acoustic), bass and much more – totally 64 to be precise. Yes – 64! And among the 64 presets, also included are other stringed instruments like Sitar, Wahwah and various types of talkboxes making this plugin an all in all Stringed instrument pack for the computer studio!

Here is a sample I created using this plugin. It is the starting chords of the Deep Purple song Smoke on the Water – one of my all time favorites!

The slayer 2 plugin has been out for nearly four years, and is much better, with several other effects like flangers, chorus, actually emulating a complete waveguide like the professionals use.

However, the sound is not the same with a real guitar, though the modelling of the drives and pickups are pretty nice.

I was using my friend’s GT9.1 a while back, with gorgeous sounds, still nice post. Reminds me of the time I used to play around with fruity loops.
