One thing every Windows user is quite familiar with is Task Manager. Windows users have a habit of opening up task manager quite a lot and the reason is quite simple – Applications do freeze frequently on Windows. Well, don’t think my love for windows is getting over, I’m still big supporter of Microsoft Windows.

Small Rant : One thing I’m feeling pretty odd in OS X is that it doesn’t have Applications menu (All Programs like menu) anywhere and so I find it quite difficult to see that which all applications are available by default.

Coming back to my main topic, I was feeling quite odd that I hadn’t opened up any system performance checking software and I always love to check that which software uses how much memory, after all i’ve got traits of a reviewer!

Thanks to Quick Silver as it suggests the applications as soon as you type one alphabet and while doing that I found out the applications which tell me more about OS X & system resources :

1. System Profiler : This nice little application gives you each and every single information about the software installed, hardware and what ever you can imagine. You can compare it to the System Information of Windows XP.

In order to launch it you can simply press Command + Space to open SpotLight and type System Profiler and press enter and get in the deep information about your mac.

2. Activity Monitor : The name itself suggests that it’s an application which monitors the activity of the system and yes in short it’s the Task manager of OS X! After seeing this it felt like I found my long lost love! I know it’s a PJ but still! Activity Monitor gives all the details which you may be thinking of finding out and rather instead of comparing it with Task manager, I would compare it with Process Explorer (so far the best task manager for windows).

These two applications will tell you a lot about your computer and if you are new to computers (not only OS X) then you will definitely find these applications a lot useful. Just use these and little bit of Google (just in case you don’t understand what info they are trying to show) and you can learn a lot about computers.

Mark my words.. you’ll get over you windows love soon. Macs are almost maintenance free. Your PC doesn’t freeze, apps also don’t hang, so why the need for process explorer?

In the last 6 months hardly I opened them for 2-3 times. Are you aware of opt-cmd-esc?
