When I made a switch to Mac OS X, the biggest concern for me was the availability of software. However as days passed and I did research, I found out that the software available for Mac are pretty much same, although the number may not be as high as Windows but pretty much each and every software is available for OS X.
I’ve decided that I’ll write reviews about Mac application quite frequently and no wonder that this blog may get converted in a Mac based blog too (well, unlikely as I can’t forget my love for MS Windows).
So here I come with the review of Ecto, a blogging client which really sucks as far as Windows version goes , however I was completely bowled over by the Mac version. I tested few blogging clients (the ones which are recommended by most blogger using Mac OS X) and found that Ecto was by far the best and pretty user friendly blogging client :
It’s got each and every feature and the interface is amazingly simple, let’s talk about it’s PROS and CONS in details :
PROS of Ecto (Mac version) :
User Interface : User interface of Ecto is pretty simple and easy to use. However, it can be certainly improved. I’m a big supporter of single window interface and I believe that ecto will become even more useful and user friendly if the interface can be made in single window rather than two.
However all the features are easily accessible in a click or two and that’s the biggest pro of Ecto as far as the user interface is concerned.
Features : The most impressive part of Ecto is that it’s full of features. It supports all major blog platforms, it syncs well with the blog, pings the blog directories, support for scripts (you may create your own add-ons - Flickr helper and Amazon helper are pretty neat scripts and come by default). It’s much simpler than the web interface of WordPress (that’s the blog platform I use for all my blogs) and gives access to every feature. You can easily add/remove tags, categories and can edit the Slug or add summary of the post.
However the only feature which I miss in Ecto is the ability to upload the images/files with the help of FTP. If at all it can have integrated FTP, then it’ll be the best blogging client one can ever think of.
CONS of Ecto (Mac version) :
I’ve already discussed the cons of Ecto. One being the two window interface (that’s kind of my personal preference, but once you’ll use Windows Live Writer, I’m sure you’ll agree to what I’m saying) and the other being the inability to upload the image/files through FTP.
Overall review and rating :
Ecto (Mac version) is by far the best blogging client I’ve ever used and without a doubt worth each and every single penny it costs. I’ll rather say that it’s worth a little more than it’s priced at this time. The developer has done an excellent job as far as the user interface and inclusion of features are concerned. I’ll give 4.5 ratings out of 5 to Ecto and it really deserves this rating.
If you are a Mac user, do tell us that which software you use for blogging and we’ll feature you in the next post, when we’ll review that software.
MarsEdit from Red Sweater. All your post editing is done in a single window, but it does have a separate upload window as well as a live updating preview window (that mirrors the look of your blog). My subjective impression of Ecto is that the UI is somewhat clunky, but feature for feature it is quite similar to MarsEdit. Cheers.
Hey Peter, Thanks for dropping by… Marsedit certainly looks promising, however I definitely miss the WYSIWYG interface. I haven’t spent much time with it but it looks just the like http://wbloggar.com/.
