PodMailing- Send huge attachments very quickly!

If 5GB offered by AOL is not enough and you want to do a rapid file sharing, then here comes PodMailing, a software that allows you to send really huge emails, of any size you want.

PodMailing is a software application that you will have to download from here. Once you get the software, the initial setup is pretty simple. All you need to do is give in you original email id and your name so that the recipient knows the huge file is from you and can reply to your id incase necessary.

So what does PodMailing do?

Once you finish the initial setup, you can compose an email just the way you normally do. Then to this email you can attach a file of any size. Once you do this, the software uploads this file onto its server and sends a link of the address of upload to the recipients. So they get to start downloading it from the server.

Not only that, it also uses the torrent technique (refer Wikipedia for more on torrents). Once people start downloading the file, they also upload a small part of the same file. So the burden on the original source is drastically reduced and therefore the transfer happens very quickly. And also, they can start downloading even before you have fully finished your upload. However if your network permits, you might get the file directly from the sender.

What if you have to Shut Down your computer in the middle of a transfer?

Both the sender and the receiver might not be able to continuously send or receive the huge file. So if a shut down has to happen, the transfer will automatically resume once the computer is switched on.

Receiving PodMails

The recipient will get an email from delivery @ podmailing.com and it will have the link to the huge file uploaded by the sender. He can either use the PodMailing software to get the file (advisable because it keeps track of podmails sent and received) or can also use uTorrent (review of uTorrent) to download it if you are familiar with torrent downloads using Torrent softwares.

Best Feature

The best feature of PodMailing I would say is that once you upload a file that has already been uploaded by someone, it detects similarity and completes your upload. So the time taken would be only the detecting time for the software to search for similar content upload. This saves a lot of time as you don’t have to upload the file from your side, it’s already on their server.

Problems likely to be encountered

The recipients email server might block the mail sent by PodMailing as spam. To prevent this, notification to the recipient must be given well in advance.

I feel PodMailing is the best solution so far to send huge attachments. It does not clog your inbox, nor does it strain the server. It is very quick and very simple. And since the underlying technology used in Podmailing uses Peer-To-Peer (Torrent), the more the people forward the same file, the quicker the transfer!
