Jing Project
Jing is a new project by TechSmith (company behind the popular screen capturing utility called Snagit) and Jing is again a screen capturing utility (in simple words, PRINT SCREEN button) which can take screen shots for you and you can even screen cast using Jing. Jing is a Freeware and the reason for that is that TechSmith wants to make their screen cast hosting service popular as Jing incorporates the feature of uploading the screen casts directly to Screencast.com
Well, lets see how good this beta project is and whether it anywhere near to other screen casting softwares or not & if TechSmith will be able to make Screencast.com any popular :
PROS of Jing :
- It’s a Freeware (at this time only, it’s a beta and test project. TechSmith may start charging a price in future).
- Supports Macintosh OS X, Windows Vista & XP (requires .Net 3.0 Framework).
- Ability to capture Screenshots and make Screencasts.
CONS of Jing :
- Doesn’t have much options like delayed screenshot (timer), free form selection, filters for image effects.
- Crashes a lot.
- No advanced screen capturing like Full-Screen DOS capturing, extended window etc.
- Only PNG & SWF support for saving the images or videos.
- Not the best of the interface. You can call it cute but not user friendly.
Overall Rating & Views :
Jing as a screen capturing utility is a big No-no from me. There are many other free screen capturing utilities which are way too better than Jing. Jing Project is nothing but an attempt to make Screencast.com popular and I think, that it can only work if at all TechSmith can provide good set of features in Jing and keep it for free.

I was trying to install it the other day, and it was terribly slow.. even after the .NET download was complete, the installer didn’t seem to respond normally.

I am not that sure about SWF. I really need a screen casting utility that will allow me to capture my digital painting process and something that I can upload to YouTube. I dont think YouTube allows SWF.

@ Madhur : Well, it just looks good but isn’t the sweet product, which you’ll want.
@ Shankar : Well, I understand that its in beta but didn’t expect it do so poor. Techsmith people could have done way better than this.
@ Vyoma : Well, you can make use of Jing for screencast but if you want the swf to be uploaded then you can always make use of Blip.Tv

Sounds like just a marketing scheme to generate more exposure for their company, like you said! I don’t do a lot of videos, so I don’t need Jing anyways. :D

@ Grace : You got it right. According to me, it was launched much before than to be called BETA. I think calling it in Alpha stage will be a better and will justify too.
@ Nirmal : Well, it just looks like a good product, but has nothing in it. Maybe the expectations I had with TechSmith were higher and that’s why I’m not at all happy with this.
@ Murray : Please check your email address for the pownce invite. Well, I Know that it can do a little bit with Videos and pictures but doesn’t offer much.

Hmm, it is slow because of its resources hunger, if you can empty some of the resources and then clean unwanted jams, it works swiftly!

@ Murray : I can understand that others programs may give the feeling that they are over loaded with stuff but don’t you think that some basic features like Freehand selection should have been part of Jing?
@ Rishi : Well, it ran beautifully on my computer, at least, it wasn’t slow.

I use it lots for our staff when showing them how to do things on computer, don’t use freehand much, use white square if i need to blank out stuff, doesn’t slow my system, and i like the history function

I fiddled with it a little but there wasn’t any real hook or stand-out feature at this point to get me into using Jing. I found your blog through quickonlinetips.com while searching for pownce invites, if you still have any available I’d appreciate one being sent to stray at midnight revolver dot com.

I have a screen resolution of: 1680×1050
And I tried Jing. I would not capture my full screen – it would zoom in and only capture part of my screen no matter how much I tried. A big thumb down. :(
I tried searching for other options – this seems to be a scarce market.

@ Ben : Name is good, company behind it is good but features in it are bad :(
@ Vyoma : It is a scarce market, but there are other options too. Keep an eye on the new posts and you’ll find the right one for sure :D (I wonder why I’m asking you to keep an eye on the new posts :P)

Hmmm… Seems every one of you has missed the point.
Techsmith already makes Camtasia. Don’t you suspect they are trying to do something different, here? With this product, you can conceive and capture a screencast and have a link to it in an IM message within 5 minutes of having the idea. You tell me what other product can do that?
Okay, so why would you want to? Well, let’s say you’re experiencing a bug and you want product support. Capture the sequence producing the error, and send an email to support with a link to your sequence in minutes. Or, let’s say Aunt Martha calls you for the 47th time, this time asking you how to spell-check her Word document. Or let’s say you just figured out how to do a photoshop effect and want to share the technique with colleagues. Get the idea?
For this kind of visual communication to occur, everything has to be at your right hand when you need it (Jing.) It needs to be dead-simple to capture (Jing.) You don’t want to think about codecs or formats (Jing.) Finally, there’s the sharing part. That, again, needs to be quick and dead-simple (Jing.) That’s why screencast.com is integral to it. And screencast.com DOES use .swf, which is also the best format for optimizing file size and video quality without thinking about it.
So, the question is simply, do you think there is a need for this kind of visual communication, user-to-user, or not? If so, you need something like Jing. Somebody name another product that fits that need. If, on the other hand, you want to do edited tutorials, buy the other product from TechSmith that is for that purpose, or use some other edit-and-share product and process that you will spend a lot more time on, if not money.
In short, if it doesn’t quack like a duck, maybe you should consider it isn’t a duck.

Yes, I know it needs revision, but it worked and the price was right (free). I really need to find a better mic to use, one that doesn't sound so rasp-y ..or maybe cuz i had a cold? Anyway, anyone know of a good place to find a better microphone for my laptop? thanks. Deb

Maybe I don't know what you mean by audio support in the free version, but I talked on my free version…
