Well, if you are running out of Disk space on your hard disk then it becomes really a pain to download stuff from the internet, which you all definitely love to do. In order to solve the problem here are few things which you can try and surely will find enough space to download that latest software (ahem! did anyone say movie and music ?)
1. Run Disk Clean up : Well, this is the first thing you should do as there are lot of files which are stored in the temporary locations and you’ll most likely find considerable amount of space.
2. Use FlexTK express : FlexTK Express allows you to classify the disks on the basis of file size and displays you files which are large, medium or small in size and accordingly you can find the files which are culprit of using up the valuable space.
3. Burn DVDs or CDs of less used files : Well, I’m sure if you’ll go through your data on the hard disk then you’ll realize that most of it is unused or the data which you don’t use frequently. Well, the best thing is that you can burn that on CDs or DVDs and then use them when required.
4. Upload important files on the internet : You can also save important files on the internet and save lots of space. XDrive gives you 5 Gb of space so if you have high speed internet connection then you can certainly upload good amount of files on XDrive (again try to upload those files, which you don’t use frequently).
5. Compress the files : Well, the key is to find out those files which are used rarely and then compress them using 7-zip or WinZip or any other compression program.
6. Use NTFS compression : NTFS supports compression and you can use that technology to save the disk space. Go to that folder which is taking up most space and follow these steps : Right Click->Properties->Advanced->Tick compress files in the folder->Click on OK.
7. Finally if none of the above suits you then the best will be to buy extra hard disk and that’ll help you for longer period of time.
#1 and #5 are not useful enough. I’d recommend being systematic in storing files, and then buying a large (500GB +) HDD for media files etc. I’m personally contemplating one such HDD too - 320 GB HDD on my comp is just not enough after all the music (creative commons, not pirated) and graphics (for GIMP)…
Another alternative is to use free ware such as JDiskReport to know where have all the good spaces had gone to. Sometimes we did not realize that there are many insignificant, big files residing inside our PC.
I prefer burning the less used files to CD/DVD, not that I have a 160GB hard disk on my lappy, I’ll be doing that less frequently. :D
@ Nirmal : Well, I hope you don’t download stuff from internet at my pace :)
@ Syahid : Thanks for letting me know about JDiskReport, I’m fairly happy with FlexTk Express, but my job is to review stuff…so now JDiskReport is on my radar :D
One other very effective way to free up disk space is to use SequoiaView. I found out about SequoiaView here:

I actually deleted around 10 GB with the help of SequoiaView.
