When it comes to networks, one facility which one always enables is File and Printer sharing because what’s the use of a network where we can’t share the files. However, when it comes to accessing the Public Networks then File and Printer sharing can be bad for us and our computer. But, if then you want to share a file with one of your friend, then you’ll need to enable the file and printer sharing and thus enabling the risk too!

In that case, one of the solution to share the file is Internet and we can share the file by either uploading it to some file sharing sites like RapidShare, DivShare etc. or we can send it through Email as attachment or we could either write the file on a CD and then send that file. Sounds too slow…??? Indeed it will be one of the slowest method of sharing the files.

However, thanks to Skype because it helps us share the files at a blazing speed and that too without enabling the File and Printer Sharing. You just need to be under the same network and you must be logged into Skype and the transfer rates will be done according the Local network speed rather than the internet connection!

I discovered this while I was sharing one file with my brother of around 11 Mb and when I shared the file using Skype, I was amazed to see the speed of transfer rate and it was near about 200 Kbps and thats pretty decent when you’ve got no other choice left.

I’m sure you were not aware of this feature of Skype or were you ? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Well, no doubt that’s one of the features of windows but what if you’ve got one Linux machine and another one as Windows. I know there are ways through which Linux and Windows machines can communicate but I’m talking about something real quick :D

This tip won’t change your whole world..it’s just that you’ll be able to send files without playing with File & Printer sharing at a time, when you want to do things real quick :)

@ Wishlost : Remember its only when you are in a local network…If you are not in a same network then it will go through the internet connection and that will be slow.

Skype by passes the internet connection when you are in a local network and sharing the file with the user in the same network.

Yup. It is a breeze to work when both parties are on local network.

Else, Skype sometimes seems to drag even small file transfers.

I wonder if they really transfer via local area network. or is it because of no hops between the internet connection when you’re in LAN setup..

It’s hardly sharing if you need someone to send the file to you. Really – you can get File and Printer Sharing working without much risk – either by using a decent personal firewall and figuring out how to configure it properly, or using a hardware firewall that sits in between your network and the internet.

@ Dunxd : Well, I agree that its hardly called sharing. Of course, this thing is not where near to normal file and printer sharing but its just that if you do get paranoid after thinking what all can go wrong if you enable file and printer sharing then this way you can transfer the files much fast.
