Windows is kind enough to remember the WEP/WPA keys and that’s why whenever you go to a place where you’ve accessed the secured wireless connection, you are automatically connected from the world of internet.
However, there can be cases where you may have forgotten the security key (i.e. WEP or WPA key) and your friend asks you about the wireless key then the next thought which comes to your mind is that why ReviewSaurus hasn’t told me about how to recover the lost Wireless security key! :P
Well, sorry for the delay but I’m sure that WireLess Key View will be able to help you in such a situation in future. This nice little utility displays the keys which are stored by the Wireless zero configuration service of windows.
The good thing about this utility is that it’s a no fuss utility! Just extract and run!
Note : it will only display the keys which are stored by Wireless zero configuration service and not from any other software/application which helps you in connecting to the wireless connection.

Nice tip. Tell me something for Mac OS X too (or does Mac have something like this built-in?)
This works like a charm. Extract -> Run it -> Done. Can’t get simpler than that.
but its in hex? i need it in ascii
I found mine (in ASCII) in the router settings (Linksys WRT54G2) under Wireless > Wireless Security.
Don’t know if other Linksys models have this or even other brands, but it’s sure faster than trying to guess or brute-force your forgotten key.
should automatically tell you below it, it seemed to do it for me
Indeed, try converting the hex by hand untill you find the correct key.
This program is freaking awesome!!! I've been trying to get my lost WEP key for the longest time and this does just what it says.
Works like a charm – and I'm pretty darn clueless on this stuff. Pulled this page up from a Google search for "wireless security key", downloaded the file, ran the utiltiy, and viola!!!
And to think there are creeps out there who would rather write a virus. Plus, Geek Squad didn't tell us the password and then would not remedy the situation.
