So true Vista home basic sucks !
I have Internet can't connect with host (404 not found)
and I have tried everything there is to try fixing it with no luck
and I am relative good with computers.

so now just going to buy a new computer.

I have had this problem for weeks on my new Vista64 laptop. I've searched everywhere for a solution, I've gone through the registry tweaking part and disabling of ipv6 etc whatever I've tried everything. Sometimes the solutions I've tried seem to work, but it turns out it's all just random.

I have however found a way to make it work for me, and I have not seen this solution anywhere else on the net. On Vista while you can't connect online (when pinging router gives Error 1231), open your Services menu and keep restarting the "WLAN Autoconfig" service over and over until it works. If your wired connection doesn't work, try restarting the "Wired Autoconfig" service.

I was just so happy to have found a solution to my problem; I hope it works for you too. :) If it works post it here so I know if it actually solves the Vista internet problem! :)

Same here, actually the answer is really simple, don't buy Vista. I'm sorry but most people are not techincal enough to make those kind of changes and why should they. You plug you old XP machine into you router via a LAN cable and volla it works, do the same with Vista and volla nothing.

Correction, Vista works half the time, goes for a while than cuts out, usually rebooting does the trick.

I stuck using the old machine till I can find someone with enough techical experience to correct a problem that should have never been a problem. How many people are in the same boat

BTW I do like the Vista interface and if I can fix the network problem I'd be happy to ditch the old machine…

my laptop uses vista and can connect to internet both cable and wireless, yesterday only the wireless can connect. my cable connection won't work.

what seems to be the problem?

I have been througth all of the above sugestions and read your artical. I said in my post I have updated my router firm were. I tryed to make the regestry entry, but there was no {GUID} sub key. My genral dislike for vista stemes from all of the other isues im having with software compatability. Any new ideas are welcome.

hi labcoat i am having the same problem i can find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParametersInterfaces but not {guid} on my laptop , i have upgraded from xp but vista cannot find any internet connections ,i have a wierd router ,with xp this would not have been a problem

I updated my routers firmware but I could not find the find the folder in the regedit. I can get to here HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParametersInterfaces but there is no {GUID} I have tried everything else its downgrade to XP or make my laptop a bonfire. any help please

I am having problems with Vista, all other computers can connect except Vista.
It keeps on saying connection to Proxy refused.
