After every few days we see a new web based applications coming up and stirring the web just because TechCrunch or Read/Write Web gave a positive response to them and wrote an excellent marketing pitch for them. I’ve been an advanced computer user from long time, however it was recently that I got a laptop for myself and started to get mobile and now what I’ve been noticing is completely different than what I used to feel while using the desktop.
While I was on desktop, I preferred more online or web based applications as it gave me lot of flexibility and I didn’t have to depend on my computer and was free to go anywhere and get access to my files where ever I wanted. However after getting the laptop I see a change in my computer usage and I’ve started to prefer more desktop based applications, the reason is simple : Mobility.
I get all the mobility while using the laptop and have started to shift to desktop based applications although I still prefer a lot of online web applications just because I’ve gotten used to them but most of the applications which I use are now desktop based. Well, to even correct the statement, I’m shifting more towards the applications which are desktop based but can connect to the internet and do the task for me.
So I wonder that do we really need the applications like PhotoShop express or Aviary when we have much advanced PhotoShop or Gimp available right at our desktop. As a blogger we write so much about these web based applications but do we really use them in our day to day life ?
Which all web based applications are you dependent on ? Do you feel that web 2.0 is nothing but a bubble 2.0 ? Well, I can’t say much but I’ve started feel that the time will tell us, it’s really a phase where desktop is meeting web and in future those applications will do well, which will actually allow users to be offline and online and not the ones which will just focus on being online.
Well, it all depends on your intended use. If it’s about pure mobility and you carry your laptop everywhere you go anyway, then you gain nothing by switching to web apps. However, if you are using web apps to gain collaboration, automatic file storage (and linking), then web apps have a very strong argument.
Either way, the bottom line is making your life more convenient. There is no one-size fits all for any given task. That’s why we still have fax machines, vinyl record players, radios, and heck… even morse code telegraphs. :)
