P2P File Backup solution or foolishness ?

zoogmo Well, I’m a great fan of P2P based software and all the way it makes sense if we use them but I really wonder that how stupid people can be when it comes to creating software which will solve your problem of data backup!

Well, one such stupidity is shown by Zoogmo, an online backup community. What they’ve done is that they allow you to make back up of your data over the internet over various computers (called partners). This is a P2P based software so basically you are sharing your hard drive space with others and likewise utilizing their hard disk to back up your files which will be encrypted and then transferred to computers of your trusted friends.

Why we make backup of the files ?

Well, only if the software creator would have thought about this question (I’m sure they must have) however, I don’t think they gave enough thought on the answer to this question. As far as I think we make the backups of the data because of these reasons :

1. We are running out of hard disk space.

2. We fear that may be if the hard disk crashes.

3. We fear that the data may get corrupt because of some virus or malware.

Now, let’s see if Zoogmo can provide an answer to that or not :

1. Hard disk space : They want you to share the hard disk space, so of course it doesn’t satisfy the first point.

2. Hard disk failure : Well, if your hard disk fails then you can easily restore the data using Zoogmo but what about the data of the person who backed up on your computer ? That’s gone!

3. Virus attack : Well, that’s what Zoogmo clearly says that it’s not a problem as the data is stored in small chunks on various computers and it’s encrypted so no virus can harm it.

Now, clearly Zoogmo doesn’t satisfy the need of backup, so I still wonder that how can they claim that it’s an online backup community. I’ll rather call it online storage system instead of backup system.

Well, as far as backup goes for me, I don’t use any service as such but if at all I will have to, I’ll prefer some professional service whose main job is to take care of my data else I’ll buy an external hard disk and transfer my important data on that. What do you think about this service, do you think that it is a killer startup idea (as Killer Startup thinks) or do you think that it’s a dumb attempt by intelligent people ?
